Hi. How long is the cable?

This one I have is approximately 1 metre in length. Also refer to my user review for another cable to extend the distance.

Can anyone confirm that this really uses an ftdi chip inside and not one of those buggy prolific chips?

The simple answer is, yes this is a genuine FTDI chipset. You can always determine the chipset by using Device Manager in Windows, scrolling to the COM ports section, and then right-click on the COM port select Properties, and then select Driver and it will display the driver details which should show the manufacturer. However, I must take you to task regarding 'those buggy Prolific' chipsets. The genuine Prolific chipsets are highly reliable, and you can download from the Prolific website a chip verification tool that will positively identify the chipset. There are a number of cheap Chinese clones that appear to be Prolific, but which will fail this test and are not reliable. Hope this is of help.

Probably not .You need a standard RS 232 adapter not a null modem wired cable.
