does the red or black side glue to the windscreen?

I'm not sure of the question-? Mine had no red or black side---the screen just sticks to the windshield---I put my unit on the dash and positioned the screen as once you sitck it there---it is hard to get off. But whatever yours is and has a screen, buy extra screens !

That's correct, however it shows a shiny silver outside through the windshield which makes it look like a large silver patch blocking your vision to any cop who sees it. That would get you in serious trouble in my state, possibly an expensive ticket for obstructed vision unless you can sweet talk the cop into looking at it from the inside and he/she may still consider it an obstruction.

Whose states is this illegal in? In the cases where it is, isn't it even more illegal to put a cell phone holder on your dash and block your driving?

It is illegal in California to put anything on your dash, windshield, or side windows that could block your view. It is also illegal to hang anything from your mirror that would block your view. I don’t know what other states have similar restrictions without reviewing each state’s statutes.

Can you see the display in very bright sunlight?

As well as your stock heads up displaybeould work. Basically meaning this won’t limit your heads up displays brightness.
