This Kataba = laser beam.
Simply put, this saw is absolutely outstanding. The main reason I got this saw was for cutting rough lumber to length (are almost to length at least), however this saw quickly became an obviously much more capable tool. I can use this for everything from rough cross-cutting, to cutting out joinery, to even flush cutting pegs for timber framing, amazing tool at an amazing price. So far the blade has retained its sharpness through approximately 10 hours of hard use (stretched over multiple projects). I've little doubt that it will last much longer before needing a new blade considering it hasn't even begun to slow down.

It's a japanese saw. There is no competition.
Title says it all. The globe has been trying to catch up to the japanese since cutting tools were invented. While the round eye was using clubs in caves, the japanese were cutting T-Rex steaks and Megalodon sushi in Shinto temples that (i might add) are still standing today because of their insane joinery work. The best part is, it's not expensive. You can cut like a Neanderthal, or you can cut like a Samurai.

Works well, sharp, not a razor saw
This is a saw with long teeth and is good for roughing things out, but it is not going to give the kind of smooth cut of a fine-toothed finishing saw. Even as a pull-saw, it does tend to dig in, so if you are cutting off dowel ends on a close-ti-finished piece, this will require some sanding. Note that this is not good for a miter box as the blade doesn't have a deep profile, so the reinforcing metal strip along the top edge could interfere with a miter box slot. It comes with a solft plastic sleeve with a zipper along the top edge, which is good for storing the saw. The bag also has a metal grommet if you like to hang your tools. The handle is wrapped with a plastic strip simulating the traditional wrap. This is not a high-dollar item, so you can't expect it to be much more than it is, but considering all the competing products out there, it is a solid value at an affordable price.

First good Japanese saw
I've played with some cheaper versions of this type of saw and was never impressed. This brand may have changed my mind. I actually used this to cut the center divider out from under my sink, knowing that it would have to be reinstalled without any filler. I was able to easily cut through the divider without leaving a gap, and I was able to reinstall using only glue and clamps. If you're new to this type of saw, IT IS PULL-ONLY! A single push stroke could damage the blade, so keep that in mind. The handle is hand wrapped, and I was impressed with how well made it is. This seems to be an art form that's going away, but the people making these did an excellent job of it.

Very good
A very good saw. Use lightly as heavy or rigorous use can break or bend the teeth. Very precise and will cut through any wood when used properly.

If you start with a Ryoba - an ideal first saw for anyone - this is the next saw to get, if you want to cut larger pieces of wood. 2x6, 2x8 and 2x10 are no problem for this saw. Certainly, you can do this with a Ryoba. This is just better - a finer cut, even more controlled and it feels like it wants to stretch out and cut larger timbers. It is a pleasure to use. A first rate saw.
