How do you insert the lead?

It has a clasp that holds the lead. I would not recommend as it broke right after I bought it. I had to duck tape a pencil on it.

It was really difficult. The math teacher did get it in but than the compass broke a month later .

What is the max radius (in inches) that the compass can generate?

I do not recommend this compass because of the poor quality. It can generate a maximum radius of approximately 4.5 inches.

How do I purchase extra lead for this compass?

Probably at an office supply store.
