Effective Small Dose and Extended Release
I've tried so many melatonin supplements over the years, and this is by far the best. The smaller dose (compared to the typical supplements) is actually more effective and healthier. And the extended release works perfectly! I am no longer waking in the middle of the night wide awake with insomnia. I have woken up once since starting, and I managed to (finally) go right back to sleep since my body was properly tired. This will be a great tool to use to force my body back into a regular sleep routine.

Excellent, But With It Was 8 Hour Time Release
The best sleep aid I've found, after trying a few different things. Long before I started having sleep problems recently, I've used the Tempur-Pedic sleep eye mask for 12 years, to block out all light when I sleep (highly recommend to add to your sleep regimen). I always wanted to make sure my sleep was the highest quality, with no light. So I was kind of surprised when I suddenly began having insomnia about 6 months ago - waking once or twice in the night, then waking at 4 a.m. "ready for the day." I'm a fan of supplements, but I've tried enough of them through the years to know I usually can't handle something strong. And of course I didn't want anything that could be addictive, because this was happening every single night, not just an "occasional" sleepless night. So I started with gentle herbal supplements and teas like chamomile, lavender, passion flower, and lemon balm. No valerian sleep aids for me, because I have a paradoxical reaction to it (instead of calming me, it gives me the opposite - anxiety and racing heartbeat). The herbs helped me relax but didn't help me sleep. I was hesitant to try melatonin because it's a hormone, and I've had my hormones messed up before, but I was desperate for sleep. I suspected the 3 mg and 5 mg doses on the market would be way too much. I started with a 1.5 mg supplement, which worked but I woke up groggy and nauseous. Too much. I tried a few lower dose options (not time released like this one), which helped me fall asleep and eliminated the first night wakings, but I still woke up at 4 a.m. on the dot and couldn't go back to sleep. Clearly I needed the melatonin to stay in my system longer, so it occurred to me to look for a time released option (which, oddly, didn't come up in my searches for melatonin until I searched specifically for time released). This looked like a good option. 1 tablet worked pretty well at keeping me asleep until about 5 a.m., which was an improvement, but it took longer for me to fall asleep in the first place because the small dose is distributed so slowly. 2 tablets are PERFECT for me at 600 mcg (equivalent to 0.6 mg, just over half a milligram, distributed evenly throughout the night). I had the most glorious night of sleep I've had in 6 months. I like this Life Extension one because it's such a tiny dose, I don't have to cut it and I was able to double up easily, without going over 1 mg. If you needed 3 tablets, it would still be less than 1 mg. With such a small dose, you can make these fine-tune adjustments. Hormones are very powerful and delicate like that. There's no reason to go overboard with them. I definitely recommend this. UPDATE: I do wish this was an 8 hour time release instead of 6. I sleep great through the 6 hours, but I'm wide awake as soon as it wears off. All the current research says adults need 8 hours of sleep for optimal health. I get by, but I NEED another two hours of sleep each night.

Higher Doses NOT Effective Long Term
I've now tried this brand and this smaller dose for about 4 nights, 2 of those nights consecutively. I must say that this dose does seem to work. It seems unintuitive to take a smaller dose and have it work, but it does. I read that most people take the higher dose because they think "more is better" and because that most brands will sell the higher dose because of a patent on the smaller dose. The patent is on 1mg or less by MIT, because Professor Wurtman discovered that small doses of this (0.3 MILLIgrams) (.3mg = this brands 300mcg) worked better. When the melatonin receptors in the brain are exposed to too much of the hormone, they become unresponsive. I've read that occurs in about 3 days. As a result, many people don't think melatonin works at all. To get around paying for the patented version, companies sell the higher doses, even though efficacy is almost nil. Crazy! After hearing about this, I bought this to try out, because I too was one of those people that it seemed to not work after a few times of taking it. Larger doses seem to help me when using once in awhile, but not when used consistently. Great product, and it seems this brand knows its supplements.

Helps you stay asleep if you tend to wake up in the middle of the night
I like this melatonin because it actually releases six hours after I fall asleep which is when I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night. I have taken two of them, but I’m a little Gun shy of taking too much melatonin luckily this is a low dose and it is possible to take two of them, but I think it’s always best to start off with one and see if that makes a difference if it makes a little bit of a difference, but you’re needing a little bit more assistance than I would increase. How many you take, but make sure that’s the only thing you’re changing with your medication’s and supplements at that time to understand how it fully impact

Thankfully Found the Perfect Formula!!
Finally Getting 7-hours of Sleep!! I never had an issue falling asleep between 10:00-10:15pm. The issue was when waking up briefly between 4:00- 5:30am, I could not go back to sleep foggy the much of the day. I did try the Life Extensions .300mcg but only got 5.5 - 6.0 hours of sleep, with the usual brief wake-up to use the bathroom. The 300mcg Timed-Release is perfect! I can go back to sleep right away after the quick bathroom stop and My Doctor said to stick with it. I wake up with no grogginess.

YMMV
Have nightmares and wake up after 4 hours as with all crappy melatonins. Their OTHER xr melatonin works well. Here's the worst part: the two affect my mother the opposite ways. So you may have to try both!

The best melatonin
This has been a lifesaver for me and is the best way to take melatonin. The 1 mg dose with the 6-hour release works really well, and I prefer it over regular melatonin.
