For the money, not bad.
Out of the 140 pens, 8 did not work. Not sure why, I tried scribbling with them, couldn't revive them. These pens were mostly the very light pastel type of colors, so this company seems to have a problem with that formula. So the baby pink, mint, super-light peach, white, butter cream colors ALL did not work, straight up, right out of the box. Some of the other pens that were problematic were also those lighter pastel-type shades, but I was able to scribble with them enough and coax them to work. And then they'd work for a bit, then stop, and I'd have to scribble again... it can really wear your hand out, and I SERIOUSLY doubt a child under the age of 12 would have the strength or the patience for this routine. So only give these pens as gifts to older children or you should plan to supervise, because there is a high level of frustration with this pen set. But 140 colors is an amazing number of colors! I did find a duplicate of one of the blue colors, the sky pastel blue, and neither of those pens worked very well actually (again, this company seems to consistently have problems with anything pastel. So if you need good quality pastel ink pens, look elsewhere!). The neons were fabulous and bright. The glitter ink pens were amazing--- if the pen works, that is. When these pens are good, they're very very good, but when they're bad, they're horrid, as the poem says. The silvers & golds are godly. The selection of all the silvers was to die for, I've never seen such a gorgeous range of pens. The golds, so many shades. For less than $20, I was very happy about that. Coppers, too. Bronze... I think you could say there was one you could have called bronze. So yes to the metallics here, strong yes. The neons are killer too. Some great eye-searing yellows and oranges. Would I get this set again? I just don't know right now, they kinda wore me out. I probably would. But I'm ready to spend a little bit more money for some higher-quality pens, something with some pastel colors that work. Hopefully I can find a set with this kind of selection; hopefully I can find a set that doesn't feel like the pens have been drying out on a shelf for nine years before they were sent to me. Fingers crossed.

Well worth the money.
These and the other pen sets like them all seem to be from the same factory (I also own the smaller set of 108 colors from courise; http://amzn.to/2sSBwjn) but they are still really fun art instruments. Unlike pencils you don't shade with these. Having a large set of colors, each a little different, lets you transition pretty well. Ink pens like this don;t last a whole long time but the refills (http://amzn.to/2sP2mJk) are under $8 for 120 colors. The different grades of metallic colors really give an impressive effect on paper. By grades I mean that there seems to be coarse, medium, and fine glitter in the ink of most of the pens. the fine glitter is a buttery smooth metallic satin that is just gorgeous. I was really surprised that the glitter flowed so smoothly from he pens, even the coarse stuff that you can feel on the paper. There are 4 pens in the set that, artistically, are useless. Those are the swirls. the Swirl pens are filled with alternating colors. they only write in one color at a time so 'why?' becomes the question. give them to the kids to take to school. Another drawback I see, that seems to be from all sources, is a lack of dark yellows. I am updating this review to reflect this as I am currently trying to color some smeared motor oil which is an amber tone and there's not a pen in either set that looks right.

Gray ink pens may not write
Some pens are very hard to start the gel flow, but I think this is true for all gels pens. A few pens, especially in light gray colors, do not write at all.
