A Charming Mystery with a Memorable Main Character
This was an enjoyable and easy to read mystery with a main character who is very different from those found in most suspense novels. Molly is hardworking, honest, and devoted to her job as a hotel maid, but she often has difficulty understanding social cues and recognizing when people are taking advantage of her. I quickly became invested in her story and wanted to see her succeed. The beginning moves a little slowly, but the story becomes much more interesting once the mystery develops. It is not an especially dark or intense thriller, but it has enough suspense, humor, and unexpected moments to keep the reader engaged. I also enjoyed Molly’s memories of her grandmother and the life lessons she continues to carry with her. The final part includes some satisfying surprises that made the story worth finishing. Overall, this is a charming and unusual mystery that is both entertaining and heartfelt.

Good, but for younger readers.
I liked the book, but it was simple and predictably paced, as if written by a young author. Good for high school reading, I think.

4 Stars
This four-star thriller was a refreshingly fun read. Generally speaking, I get very annoyed by the “falsely accused” thrillers, but this one was so well done that it did not bother me at all, in fact I wholeheartedly enjoyed it. SUMMARY Molly Gray is a maid at a fancy boutique hotel. She absolutely loves her job and takes pride in doing it with meticulous excellence. Although Molly’s cleaning skills are top notch, she struggles with social skills. I think she may possibly fall on the spectrum somewhere. She tends to have trouble interpreting other peoples reactions and doesn’t seem to know what the appropriate thing is to say in many situations. One day, Molly finds one of the hotels most prominent guests dead in his hotel room. Since she was the person who found him, the police question her about the scene. Unfortunately for Molly, since she struggles with social skills and reading people, the police find some of her answers to be bazaar, suspicious and unsettling. Mollys grandmother, the one person who she can totally count on, recently passed away, leaving Molly struggling with both financial issues and having no one to confide in. Molly feels alone in the world, she has no one to turn to. Even though she had no involvement in the guests death, she finds herself getting and more entangled in the situation. WHAT I LOVED There is so much to love about this book. I think my favorite part of this book is Molly herself. Molly is the narrator of the book. It is all from her perspective. Hearing the situations from her unfiltered point of view with often hilarious. She misjudged many situations, which at times could be hilarious, at other times was kind of dangerous for her. I love the way she absolutely took pride in her job as a hotel made and was shocked that other people didn’t see it has the best job in the world. I loved her relationship with her grandmother. I just really loved everything about her. The plot itself was quite good. As I said earlier normally I hate “falsely accused thrillers,” but this one did not have that same feel to it. I read this book quickly because I could not put it down. WHAT I DIDN’T LOVE There wasn’t a lot not to love, but there were a few things that I found a little odd. Not exactly real life. I don’t want to give too much away but one example has to do with the duties of an attorney. Just a few small things like that. But no big deal. OVERALL I totally wholeheartedly enjoyed this book and would be happy to read the next book written by Nita Prose.

The Maid by Nita Prose
I finished The Maid quickly, but I kept thinking about it long after. What initially presents itself as a cozy mystery becomes something more thoughtful — a story about innocence, literal thinking, and how easily someone can be misunderstood. Molly Gray is a fascinating narrator. Her strict routines, moral clarity, and literal understanding of the world shape every interaction, and the novel’s decision not to label her with a diagnosis feels intentional and respectful. Instead of telling us who Molly is, Nita Prose lets us experience the world as Molly does — and that choice gives the book its emotional weight. Some of the most powerful moments are also the most uncomfortable. Situations that appear suspicious or morally unclear from the outside are, from Molly’s perspective, acts of care or honesty. The novel quietly asks the reader to reconsider how intent, truth, and responsibility are judged. By the end, The Maid is not just a mystery to be solved but a character study that stays with you. It’s an engaging, compassionate, and surprisingly thought-provoking read — one I genuinely enjoyed and would recommend.

A Story that Delves Deeply into Life’s Struggles and Triumphs
Molly is a maid at the Regency Grand Hotel, dedicated to always doing the best possible job and to making sure each room gleams with perfection. She encounters all sorts of people in her job, including an illegal immigrant, a shady bartender and a supercilious and abusive patron of the hotel. When a murder happens in one of the rooms for which she is responsible, it is Molly’s attention to detail that helps solve the crime. The book is paced well, but not fast because Molly’s story is told methodically, with great detail and some prolonged suspense. The characters are well-developed and most are likable. My favorite was the doorman at the hotel, Mr. Preston, who helps Molly in her pursuit of justice. I really enjoyed the story behind the story, of shady dealings and work visas as well as the story of the death of Molly’s grandmother, an incident in her life that influenced her life choices. The book has a tone of a memoir even though it is fiction. I checked out a copy of the book from my local library via the Libby App. I was not required to write a positive review.

Bello.

Cosy Noir with Eleanor Oliphant vibes.
Who doesn’t love an unreliable narrator, especially one who’s a little bit on the spectrum, speaks like they’ve stepped out of a 1930 Agatha Christie novel and happens to be a maid in a very posh hotel? Molly Gray, fastidious maid at the Regency Grand Hotel finds the body of a guest, Mr Black, stone cold dead in his swish suite. Molly’s trusting nature and naivety soon lands her in hot water when she becomes the main suspect in Mr Black’s murder. When she’s arrested and charged, it seems all is lost. Molly, the oddball maid who takes life a little too literally, seems to be hiding something. Is she telling the truth? Or is she protecting someone? Or, is she just being targeted because she’s odd and convenient? I wasn’t expecting the cosy mystery/feel good vibes given the blurb, but I really did enjoy this. Molly leads a cast of quirky, likeable characters. Nita Prose did an excellent job of making the characters come to life and drawing us along in a page-turning mystery. I will admit I was a little disappointed when everything was wrapped up about 80% through the book - I really was expecting some bulging biceps, no-neck thug to step in an kidnap or attempt to kill Molly, but that didn’t happen. There is a final unexpected twist at the end - I won’t spoil this because I do want you to go out and read this book. The feel of the book is part domestic thriller, part-cosy mystery and has strong Eleanor Oliphant vibes. I definitely recommend it if you want something a little different but with a few well-honed mystery/thriller tropes.

A fascinating insight into the mind of a high functioning autistic character
I found the character to be compelling, and could not stop reading after the first few chapters. Molly is clearly very intelligent, but sees things through a simpler worldview than most others. One of my favorite elements of the book is Molly's evolution from a simplistice right/wrong morality to a more nuanced understanding as she internalizes the lessons from the world around her. Also interesting is that as a reader, I experienced much stronger emotions than Molly herself as it became clear what was happening to her while she did not understand. At the very end, however, it became clear that I had underestimated her just like the other characters in the novel.
