Does this unit hold and seal the tire stem well? The clamp looks the cheap one that doesn't stay on the valve stem.

Put on correctly, it seals and will hold air...it is not a cheap fitting. I have used mine to check tire pressure even without an air hose hooked up when I was just checking.

Yes, the black air hose that is attached to this unit has 1/4" NPT on both ends and fits standard accessories. It appears that any of the Milton dual head air chucks will fit as they are furnished with female 1/4" NPT.

Can this gage be used with the air hoses you find at many gas stations?

Everyone else has given you the common answer, which is no. 4-24-16 The one I received today IS the updated version with the steel mesh hose and 2 AAA batteries. Also, simplified battery installation/replacement procedure. Simply peel back the rubber cover, pry open battery compartment door, install batteries, replace compartment door and re-seat rubber cover.
