The description states it is 8". Is that total width or is that the picture size? How wide is the opening?

Opening is 8". Frame is about another 2+", the backing board is fairly thick, so it depends on the thickness of your picture, print, needlework, etc. how tightly it fastens. Hangs easily. Overall very good for our purpose. CM

The inside, glass section is less than 8". It fit my design of 6 3/4" x 7 1/4" with just a little clear glass left.

Can this be used to display a collector plate?

I don't know but I don't think it would work for that
