The holster isn't needed for solid device protection. The belt clip just offers easy carrying.

Can the belt clip be used directly on jeans (no belt on)

I find that attaching to the belt or waistband makes it awkward when bending or sitting - I always clip it to my front pants pocket and it works fine.
