It pits small olives fine but the small olives end up smooshed, if you care about them retaining their shape.

Not sure what you mean by smaller olives. I use it on castelvetrano olives. I pit the castelvetrano olives and stuff them with blue cheese. It works very well. Once in a while it smushes an olive, but they are usually older olives. Hope this helps.

Country of origin -- Where is this made?

I understand this is a Matfer Bourgeat product, which is a French company manufacturing professional quality kitchenware. This particular product, however, is made in Germany. The "Westmark" brand implies it's made in WEST Germany, which of course doesn't technically exist anymore, but the stamping on the product is "W. Germany".

Does it work on extra large olives

If the olive is larger than 3.5 cm (1-1/4") it won't fit in the device. I pitted some larger olives sideways; it worked, but left a larger, ragged hole in the fruit. I could still use those olives in salads or cooking, but not in an antipasto plate where presentation is important.
