One of the best groups from the Golden Age of Rock
The Hollies often get overlooked in discussions of the greatest music of the 70's. Coming from England, they were overshadowed by The Beatles, but they had more songs that hit the American Charts than The Beatles. While I liked the Beatles, I liked the Hollies much more. Their experiments in music always worked; something we can't say about the Beatles. Their harmony was outstanding; their musical choices were brave. Their rendition of "He ain't Heavy" is considered by many to be the best recorded. Their songs showed humor and I will stop going on about how much I, personally like the Hollies. Everything I have written is just my opinion. If you like music from the early 60's through the 70's, you owe it to yourself to sit down and listen to this CD. You'll probably forget all the songs they sang and the talent they possessed. (I wish they'd needed someone to write reviews in those days - I was in high school and college but I would have quit for them!)

Not the greatest Greatest Hits collection
With 47 tracks, the EMI double-CD is the genuine 'Greatest Hits' album, and it is usually available at discounted prices, so if you want one sprig of Hollies in your collection, that is the one to pick. The current alternatives are this one and the Anthology album. The latter looks like the worst choice because it omits the earliest hits like Bus Stop and On A Carousel. That's like a Beatles collection without She Loves You or I Want to Hold Your Hand. This Sony disc has 13 tracks that comprise all the essential songs and sells at about a third of the cost of the EMI double-CD new, and about half the cost when used copies are compared. The insert notes on this disc are minimal; those on the EMI disc are much better. Go for this one only if you are really counting pennies, otherwise opt for the double-CD album. The group is still going, albeit with no original members apart from Tony Hicks, although Bobby Elliot is almost original. Actually, the lineup has changed less frequently than most perennial groups but for me, Alan Clarke was the essential member, and in his brief absence in the 70s and since his retirement, they are The Hollies in name only. Clarke's singing is their trademark. Graham Nash got more attention, because of his later association with Crosby, Stills & Nash (& Young). But Nash was never a great singer, in either group. The Hollies are light and frothy and poppy, but musically good nonetheless. They are very derivative. They are an amalgam of The Everly Brothers and the early Beatles. They were not in the vanguard of the British Invasion, but were an important part of the rearguard. They are great fun and very listenable. And let's not forget that He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother is one of the very greatest popular songs ever. That particular song absolutely has to be in your collection.

Love the Hollies
I've always loved the Hollies. I got hooked on them when I first heard Bus Stop when I was in high school (a very long time ago). I bought this when it first came out. Somewhere along the way it disappeared, so I thought I would buy it again. I was pleasantly surprised to find The Air That I Breathe was added as a bonus track. (wasn't on the first release), It is their best song. This is great and sounds excellent. The case had a small crack, but you don't play the case, so makes no difference to me. The 3 songs that I wish they added in addition to The Air That I Breathe is I'm Alive, Magic Woman Touch, and Jesus Was a Cross Maker. This would have made this collection absolutely perfect. But as it is, the price was great and so is the c.d. Don't understand the bad rap on Carrie Ann, it sounds as it always has. The Hollies always had a place in my music collection. This is a 5 star c.d.

Hollies ain't heavy, they're cool.
Absolutely love this vinyl, great hits, hollies were somewhat over looked in the era of Beatles/stones. For mine they were up there as regard to hit songs. This vinyl is a great example of that. Highly recommend. Love the cover too!
