Despair, fear, claustrophobia, panic...
I never expected to actually feel the things that all horror games try to make you feel. The only other games that gave me such a keen sense of desperation and hopelessness were the Soulsborne games. The Metro has such depth, as both the physical 'home' of humanity and the constant reminder of humanity's mistakes, failures, and approaching extinction. The locations in both Metro 2033 and Last light were very unique, and stood apart from what I'd seen in other games. The atmosphere, lighting and ambience were amazingly immersive, and the Russian accents just put it over the top. At first I thought 'you'd only be able to do so much with underground train tunnels,' but I underestimated the Metro team's imagination. Cobwebs, flooding, fungi, monster nests, monsters, corpses, all amidst human depravity, rumours of war and the crumbling remnants of 'modern' society. And don't get me started on above-ground; beautifully bleak with those 'wonderful' air filter sections that 'tested your skills' and doomed the unworthy to repeatedly putting on and taking off their mask to preserve the 8 seconds of air they suddenly discovered they had - while fighting off packs of mutant wolves and praying for the damned cutscene to end before the protagonist choked to death and I had to do it all over aga- The gun sounds though... not the best. I'm no expert by any means - I only just started getting into fps this year with Bioshock and Far Cry 4, but I still noticed the satisfying clicks and clunks of those guns, which was a bit lacking in Metro. Most noticeable for me was the fact that reloading assault rifles reminded me less of gritty soldiers walking on a knife's edge between war and peace, and more of a 90's Nerf gun commercial. Having said that, the 6-cartridge shotgun had my favourite reload animation of any gun I've ever seen in any game. I didn't even care that it took 6 days to complete. If I died because of it, I deserved that death. Ah what else. Metro 2033 was good, but Last light was amazing. I'm still the noobiest of noobs when it comes to shooters, so no Ranger difficulties for me, but normal Sparta mode (I think) was hard enough and I died quite a few times. Some dlcs were hit and miss, but most were pretty good. Both games were relatively short compared to say... Far Cry 4, but then the story is pretty linear, and I still felt I got my money's worth in content. Actually, since I paid 16 bucks for this, I'd say I got many times more than that. So, if you like shooters, horror, and are a victim of this economy like me, give this a buy. You won't regret it.

Great action, a story with a moral lesson, and a realized world
First Person Shooters is my favorite genre of games for one simple reason: when done right, FPS games can be some of the most poignant, immersive, and significant pieces of media one can consume. There are of course games like Call of Duty (a personal favorite series of mine) that excel in capturing the feel of a Michael Bay type movie but don't offer much in the way of significant story. You feel immersed in the experience even if the story doesn't really register in any real way other than being a means to move the action forward. Then there are games like Half-Life or BioShock that offer a truly great story. In my opinion Half-Life and BioShock are fantastic games because of their story, despite their generic gameplay. The gameplay is not bad by any means, but what draws you to the game is the story, not how the game plays. The game play merely exists to give you the tools to drive the story forward. Somewhere in the middle of these two extremes (CoD - Half-Life) there exists the Metro series. Metro 2033 started life out as a book written by Dmitry Glukhovsky. A post-apocalyptic tale set in the Moscow Metro system chronicling the story of the inhabitants of the metro system. These inhabitants being the last known survivors of a nuclear bombing brought about by World War 3. The book itself is a powerful read in its own right. The game follows the books story in broad strokes, but there are instances of editorializing for the sake of efficiency in story-telling. So what makes Metro 2033 and Last Light so great? Aside from offering a story that is compelling if a bit fantastical, the games also offer the most immersive game play mechanics in any FPS. HUD's are minimal. There are various physical in-game objects that you can refer to track any number of important items like ammo or your gas mask filters. The dark and claustrophobic settings are enough to keep you on edge throughout your run. There are a number of systems and mechanics that you have to be aware of to succeed in Metro. For instance: anything that uses a battery charge (like your often used flashlight) has a limited amount of charge that you have to keep an eye on while using. You can manually pump more charge as needed, but this needs to happen during a break in action since it leaves you vulnerable to enemy attacks. Metro games stand toe-to-toe with genre giants because of the level of quality and care that is apparent in everything from the design of the world, to how the story is told. This is a labor of love, and I cannot wait to see how the series moves forward with Exodus.

A MUST-BUY for PS4. Some very minor flaws - but don't let them stop you from buying and having a great time!
This pairing of games for the PS4 is magical. I'll make this short and sweet. Pros: - Fantastic story. If you haven't read the books, do so before playing and it makes it even better! - Graphics got a nice boost with the next gens. Not the latest and greatest, but you won't be disappointed. - Sound design is great and headphone users prepare to have a code brown in your pants during certain missions - Controls are typical FPS. They can be a little confusing at first. - Gameplay: 90% of the gameplay is just hands down good-ole' Fallout-style adventure and some COD-style battles. I've put easily 40 hours of gameplay into this by looking for every single piece of loot I could find. I played as Normal and still ran out of ammo and air mask filters occasionally. Cons: - There are some quicktime-events in the game, but they are minimal and not overly irritating as opposed to Tombraider for example - The missions that involve the dark ones are hands-down annoying. The best comparison I could think of is the nightmare levels from Max Payne. They don't add anything to the gameplay. Developers should have just left these as in-game movies to move the story along. - Every once in a while, you'll find yourself stuck in a mission and out of air filters. I have no idea how I managed to do this since I explore every single area for loot. When you are exploring station D9 for instance, be VERY careful with your filter life. TIP: If you are getting low, just put your mask on/off over and over again to preserve your last filter until you find a new filter. It's the only way I got through some levels. - The game save feature kind of blows. It saves one checkpoint file. If you screw up and want to move back a checkpoint or two, you're out of luck. You have to re-start the entire chapter. Even with these "flaws", these games are darn near perfect. I have started playing at 8PM and looked at the clock to find out it's 2AM. Play with the lights out, and good luck!

A fantastic remastering of classic games.
If you liked Original Metro, you'll love this. Two new modes: Survival is a lot like Metro 2033, and it makes the game harder, but not less fun. I beat both of them on survival before trying Spartan out. Spartan is easier, but more fluid. Metro 2033 is remastered beautifully. Remember those stealth encounters you memorized? They are now smoother than ever, with more options, more paths, and new features. Whole areas have been redone to make them longer and more relevant. Some loading screens have been taken out, instead having a playable section bridging the gap. Metro: Last Light shares the beauty, while also giving you all the wonderful DLC. Kshatriya is my favorite. In Kshatriya, you are a Spartan of Polis. You have to go up and collect artifacts, STALKER style. You come back, refill on ammo, filters, etc, and go back up until you find everything, or find the map of secret metro. There are three mainstory-based DLC as well. Anna, Khan, and Pavel. All of those you play as the forementioned characters, except Khan, which you play as Uhlman. The Developer Pack allows you to visit a Last Light museum, AI Arena, shooting gallery, and a new story mission about spiders. You also get two different faction missions, one involving a Red Line sniper, and another involving a Reich heavy trooper. This game was a fantastic buy.

This Game is Hardcore! Remastered from an (older PS3) game 2008, for (PS4 platform). The latest release, 2014.
I have passed this game over so many times, and did not fully understand the history behind this infamous game. I have played Watch Dog, Dying Light, The Last of Us, The Order-1886, and Kill Zone-PS4; just to name a few heavy hittersโฆbut whoa! I was stunned at the amazing quality and craftsmanship and detail of this game. This game is ahead of its time. The game play in what a game should be. The story line is apocalyptic and will keep you captivated based on the book โMetro 2033โ. This game has hardcore gun fights, mystery, and tons of carnage, blood, gore and violence! All the ingredients of a (damn) good game. The premise of this game; there was a nuclear war, Russia was devastated all over, Naziโs fighting Communist for territory and survival within Russia, while mutant creatures as a (bi-product) or result of the nuclear fallout are running around creating havoc on the survivors all across old Russia. I love these types of games. I think the producers did a fabulous job and hope they are in production on new games to come! This is money well spent guys. Hope this simple review helps. Thank you.

Not for the casual gamer
There are two games that come with this disc. The first, Metro 2033, shows its age, even with a remaster. This is not a problem, in general, but becomes a point of frustration when you realize that the controls are clunky and are not quite adequate for the type of enemies and combat that are required. Many of the mutant enemies are very fast and trying to fight them with what feels like a bad camera, slow reloads on a gun and virtually no ammo, makes for a frustrating experience. The story is somewhat interesting and the atmosphere can be intriguing at times. However, I found myself becoming more frustrated as I moved forward in the game. This is not really a run and gun type of game. You have to have a mixture of stealth and gun play. The age of this game makes the levels very repetitive and all the the same. There is no hand holding at all, so you must have the patience to figure out where to go and what to do. Often, you are left scratching your head and wondering it you took a wrong turn. I ended up quitting the first game and starting the second, Metro Last Light. There was a noticeable improvement in graphics and narration. This game felt more immersive, and the game play is initially fun, with lots of opportunities to be stealth and get in those headshots. Ammo is much more abundant and some people hate that. You spend about the first half of the game dealing with human enemies, which for good or bad, has a little of that COD feel. However, as you progress, they start dumping mutants on you in situations that once again, become frustrating. All of a sudden, you get stuck in areas where your mask filters run out every few seconds and often there are none to be found. You begin to deal with the same mutant in your face frustration and not being able to really reload your gun and deal with them as much. Once you get to the swamp level, the frustration ramps up. I had to start the chapter over due to not having any filters and then having to run through an entire area, rather than explore and enjoy what was an attractive outdoor map. There's some frustrating boss fights and you can find yourself dying from no air filters right when you kill the boss. The developers seem to be trolling the player. I went from liking this game to just wanting to get done with it. Much of it felt that "Cheap" difficulty. Literally, kill 20 mutants, move to next room, wait on elevator, kill 20 more mutants, repeat. These kinds of situations can be fun if combat and supplies are adequate, but that doesn't exist here. I will say that much of the gun mechanics are nicely done, but again, having to reload every few seconds when mutants are smacking you in the face, is just not fun and leads to aggravation. I would say that if you are a hard core gamer and like a challenge, then you'll probably love this. If you are more casual and don't like frustration, then avoid this. I'm somewhere in between, but for me, when a game is difficult, I want to have a smile on my face, and not to feel as though the developers took the easy way out by spamming enemies at me and taking away resources.

Enter the Metro
Metro Redux is the remastered version of Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light, available on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The remastered games run 60 frames per second on both Xbox and PlayStation, however the PS4 version runs at 1080p while the Xbox run in 912p. The game is beautiful the landscapes and the metro tunnels are beautifully lit with the games lighting being some of the best in the industry. The graphics are greatly improved from the last gen versions and the frame rate is smoother than the last gen versions which are put to shame. If you want to play metro this is the definitive version to play it on consoles. The gun play is solid there are two ways to play the stealthy way to conserve ammo and resources or the guns blazing approach which wastes ammo and resources. However the game is not perfect in its story. The game's characters are its biggest problem, Artyom the game's protagonist is a bore he is a silent protagonist in the game this makes him not that interesting. The worst part is he not even fully silent he talks in between level in the loading screens, which is the worse part he has a voice actor a face so there is no reason to make him silent, it does not even improve the immersion when people talk to you or something dramatic is going on and your character is a mute that doesn't immerse you in fact it takes you out of the experience. The supporting characters are not even that interesting there may be one or two rememberable characters but for the most part there just introduced and leave as quickly as there introduce. While the main characters are dull the world is certainly not the metro feels like a believable world and the stations are the pinnacle of this, when you see how humanity is trying to live in this post-apocalyptic Moscow it is believable. Metro Redux is worth the fifty bucks you get two beautifully remastered games that are better than most games currently out for the PS4. Ps: if you want more metro I highly recommend Metro 2033 and Metro 2034 by Dmitry Glukhovsky it's a good read and it makes Artyom a fully developed character on like his videogame counterpart.

A worthwhile collection
This contains two of the original games in the Metro series. A reasonably enjoyable first person shooter. With a great dystopian science-fiction setting. Set in Russia where humanity has been driven underground by nuclear war. Set almost entirely in the Russian Metro system. This games atmosphere is great. I love that it includes the original Meto it as I recall only came out on PC. The updated graphics make it so you can actually see what is going on. That would lacks some of the mods he would get with PC. So they are not missed. If I told you any more of the plot it would ruin it for you. But you should buy it.
