The First-Time Manager (First-Time Manager Series) Review: A Solid Guide for New Managers with Practical, Easy-to-Use Advice - The First-Time Manager is a really helpful book for anyone stepping into leadership for the first time. It covers all the basics you wish someone would explain when you suddenly find yourself responsible for a team — things like communication, building trust, handling tough conversations, setting expectations, and learning how to guide people instead of just doing everything yourself. What I appreciated most is how straightforward the book is. The authors don’t overcomplicate things. Each chapter focuses on a real skill a new manager needs, and the examples make it easy to understand how to apply the lessons in everyday situations. It felt like having a mentor walk me through the things I should be thinking about: treating people with respect, being consistent, giving clear direction, and making space for employees to grow. The book also gave me a few “pause and think” moments — especially around how much influence a manager’s attitude and approach can have on team culture. It helped me look at my own habits and consider what kind of manager I want to be long-term. If there’s one drawback, it’s that some of the concepts will feel familiar if you’ve read other modern leadership books. And since it’s meant for beginners, it stays pretty high-level rather than diving deep into advanced techniques. Overall, though, The First-Time Manager is a solid, practical guide that gives you the confidence and foundation to lead effectively. If you’re new to managing people—or want a refresher on good leadership basics—this book is definitely worth picking up. Review: Great for first time supervisors/managers - I got one of these books back in the 90's when I first became a manager. I was very impressed with the easy read and wise counsel. So when my nephew got his promotion to a manager position with little experience in managing/supervising people I knew this book would come in handy for a first-timer!

valuable insight for managers and subordinates
The book itself is a great read. i found it easy to follow. im preparing for an interview for a management role, and at the very least i know I've learned valuable insight to dealing my own managers in the future. the only reason I couldn't give this book 5 starts were because the title on the spine is printed upside down.

Game Changer
Oh my! I’m so impressed with how well written, easy to read and applicable this book is! I’m a new manager and would have tremendously benefited from getting my hands on this sooner than I did. Would highly, highly, highly recommend this book to those considering management and/or are new to management!!

Should be mandatory reading for ALL managers
This book is great for managers/leaders in any organization and I highly recommend it. Contrary to what one reviewer said - it is not outdated. Good advice is never outdated. I am an attorney who moved into HR two years ago and I could have written this book. It provides the same sage advice I've been giving managers and leaders for over 30 years - if followed, it will reduce legal action AND lead to more engaged and happy employees who are less likely to leave the organization. The managers/leaders will likely be happier and less stressed too. In my experience, I see far more bad and/or mediocre managers/leaders than truly good ones. This book can help change that - for the reader who is willing to learn and change behaviors. Good management and leadership is not an innate talent for the majority of people - it can and should be learned by EVERY manager/leader not just the new ones. Even those with innate talent and good emotional intelligence can learn something from this book.

Managerial tips
One of the best manager books out there. It lays out the groundwork that first managers should know. I still love Bud to Boss more, but this is a great book as well. The key thing is that great leaders do very well with their employees and customers. How do we get more people orientated? Some people are great at while others aren’t. I’m not. I’m more of task orientated, but the focus has been people since I’ve started a higher position where I work.

Amazing book for someone transitioning from technical to managerial role

I purchased this book for 2 of my employees who have recently been promoted to Management roles. They are only about half way through at this time but the feedback is that this book is amazing! It covers everything and more that a first time Manager needs to learn and know. My pick of choosing this book for them was an optimal pick on my part! 😃
