Great specs in ruggedized smartphone at a bargain basement price!
UPDATE: 10/06/2014 Well after writing my original review, I bought one of these for myself and after using this phone for several months, I stand by everything I said in my original review, however, there are a couple things I would like to add. I have actually stopped using the Terrain myself and switch back to my old S2 Skyrocket. I really like the phone itself and it bothers me that I had to switch back. The main reason I had to switch back has nothing to do with the phone itself, but has to do with the people who design the android apps. I am a heavy business user that depends on several business related apps every day to do business. Several of my business related apps do not function properly on the Terrain because they are designed exclusively for larger screened smartphone and/or are incompatible with candy bar style smartphones. In a world where there still exist millions of candybar style smart phone like Blackberrys, I find it almost inconceivable and totally inexcusable that serious business oriented app designers would design an app that would only work on smartphone with huge touchscreens. But alas, that is the irresponsible tech world we live in. Because of this, I found myself having to carry my old S2 Skyrocket around with me so I could use it to run the apps I needed that were incompatible with the Terrain and it just made no sense, so I was forced to switch back, even though I liked the terrain much better. The second thing is that I require quite a few apps for many purposes (i.e. camscanner, acar, aquamail, etc, etc). Even though this phone has the same amount of ram as my old S2 Skyrocket, I ran out of ram app space before I got all my apps installed that I need, and this is after disabling all other non essential apps like facebook and all the at&t crapware. I never ran into this bottle nrck no matter how many apps I installed on my s2 skyrocket (that has the same amount of ram), so I am not sure who is at fault here. Is it a phone design problem, an Android problem or something else. Regardless, I still like the phone and will continue to use it on days when I require a rugged waterproof phone. It take pretty good pictures and videos and the battery life is much better then my Skyrocket. The battery charges very fast too. If they were charging 200 or 300 hundred for this phone I would reduce ny rating down to a 4 start, but at $85, it is well worth 5 stars. Original Review: Bought this for my son who destroyed his Galaxy S3 in less then three months. He has only had it a few days, but he already loves it. I think I will buy one for me for when my Samsung Galaxy bites the dust. Don't let the price fool you. This is a great phone with good specs. In fact, you will be hard pressed to find a ruggedized smartphone with these kinds of specs at any price. It has a dual core 1.5 Ghz processor, 8GB of internal memory (expandable to 32GB with MicroSD), 2G, 3G, 4G and LTE capability, Corning Gorilla Glass 2, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS radio, Accelerometer, proximity and compass sensors, and even a FM radio antenna for crying out loud. It has military grade water, dust and shock resistance. It has rear and front facing cameras. And the list goes on. Honestly, this phone should be priced in the $400 to $500 dollar range. The reason it is not, is only because the NEC company drop it's phone lines and does not offer support for them anymore. So what does this mean? Well, all that it means is that NEC will not be releasing any updates for the operating system on the phone. The phone comes with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) which a very good version of android and should be good for as long as you will own the phone. Besides this, Android is an open source operating system and there are many people in the android community writing custom android operating systems (roms) for phones. For example, I am currently running android Kitkat on my old Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, but neither Samsung nor AT&T have released this upgrade for this old model phone. The android community made this ROM for my model of phone and it works great, actually it is much better then the ROMs from the manufacturers because it's not full of bloatware (useless programs manufactures and phone service providers stick in the operating system that you can't get rid of and that hog system resources). The bottom line is this. This phone is priced at $85 bucks and that is highway robbery for a phone with these specs. The one thing you need to know is that this phone is a WORK phone and is not intended to be used as a toy. There are some reviews that complain about how small the screen is. REALLY!! It's like these people cannot read or something! They order a candy bar style phone with a real keyboard and they expect to get a full size 5" screen like what comes on an S5 or something. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! How can they complain about the size of the screen when they knew that it was a small screen when they ordered the dang phone. That's like buying a red car and then complaining that the car is red. Are they being serious? I have not found any reviews that have any serious complaints about the actual functionality of this phone, and that is all that matters. Yes, there are always going to be some glitches with the android ROM or app incompatibility. But these kinds of glitches and complaints are present even in the newest of phones on the market. It is just part of a fast moving, ever evolving, technology market that never stays in one place long enough to work all the kinks out. PROS: 1. Unbelievable price! 2. Incredible specs for a ruggedized smartphone. 3. Military grade water, dust and shock proofing. CONS: 1. Manufacturer has discontinued support. Bottom Line: If you need a great rugged, waterproof, dust proof and shock proof, smartphone with LTE connectivity, your search is over. Don't worry about the lack of manufacturer support because, if this thing works out of the box, you should never need any support. At a price that is one fifth of any other ruggedized smartphone with these specs, you can afford to buy several, just in case you drive over your first one with a bulldozer and manage to break it.

VERY VERY slow
Initially very happy. Being resident in Europe, I had a friend bring this over from the US. Why? Because I HATE touch screens and this was the only phone all over the world made after 2014 which still had a physical keyboard, according to website GSM Arena. I didn't care the phone was branded to AT&T, as long as it would work in Europe. It looked really nice, stylish and with a keyboard. It connected to any wifi really fast and I was happy with 4G. Now after just 6 weeks of use, the internal memory is full, it doesn't take any updates anymore, and it's not possible to root it. Some apps like Google Maps, ICQ and Whatsapp take ages to open (and I don't even use other apps on this phone, as I have a second (touchscreen) Samsung). GPS takes sometimes more than a minute to find where you are and often not precisely. I really wish I could send it back but I can return anymore. Keep your distance.

Warning
Warning! My phone does not work with data. I cannot navigate internet, check email o social networks if I am not connected to wifi. All chips work for calls but not data. The seller said it is unlocked but is not completely unlocked. If seller disagree with this review, he can change my phone for another really full unlocked

Would be good, but for the horrid storage space partitioning.
Love it, but this phone is not rootable by any ordinary means. One thread on one forum claims it did... haven't tried it yet. The ONLY problem with this phone is that while it has "8GB internal storage", it has a dedicated ~800mb partition where it stores EVERYTHING. EVERY app, every app's data, and so on and so forth. It came preloaded with about 500MB of system files and undeletable ATT bloatware, which leaves about 250mb of space for installing apps IF you go and clear the cache frequently. First priority on rooting this thing (if I ever do) is to repartition it. The phone itself is excellent. The speakerphone is brutally loud even on low indoors and driving in town. The phone is durable, the keypad is great too. Front-facing camera is there but about the same quality as my 3mp camera on my last phone. Rear camera has a flash and is present with pretty decent quality. I take this thing in the shower with me for music most days. 100% waterproof. My only complaint is really the space, but the huge "convenience key" on the left side of the phone is very aggravating. I haven't found a way to disable it, so I have it set to start the camera. I hit it on accident frequently when using the button on the opposite side of the phone to lock/unlock the screen. So if anyone finds a way to root this thing, this phone will be awesome. But in the state it comes from from the factory, it's nerfed as far as adding useful apps.

Nice phone but 'not all that'
This is a nice rugged phone. I mainly purchased it for gps purposes and some apps that I can't find for my Windows phone. It makes a good mp3 player as well. The internet is really fast on this and the screen is adequate. Nice loud speaker for hand-free operation. The screen lock is nice and prevents "butt-dialing". Even the call answer is setup in such a way to help prevent answering the phone accidentally while pulling it out of your pocket. Emailing pics from the phone requires more work. You have take the picture first then write the email and then attach. Capture picture function is on mms though. The hotspot feature doesn't work. Great phone for the price but if you are looking for a way to get Hotspot without additional fees, this isn't the phone. It always worked on my Windows phone which I ordered as well. This makes a good backup phone though...

Great price for features provided
I love this phone! Got it after mine took one two many dips in the water... toddlers ;). But with this phone they can dunk it and drop it and it's all good. I prefer a physical keyboard so this is great. It also has a touch-screen that rotates, which is nice. It has google play for apps and a 5mp camera, nice for a phone. It is UNLOCKED! I have t-mobile and all I needed to do was trim my regular size sim card to fit in the microsim slot that at&t requires (nec terrain is supposed to be an at&t exclusive phone). To trim the sim card use nice, sharp scissors. You can find reference photos on google images. Nothing else needed to set up phone. If you need something durable, this is a great phone at a great price.

Crap. Put it in an airtight container for three ...
NOT WATERPROOF! Was so excited to purchase this for my husband. He didn't need anything fancy, but he needed rugged and I thought this fit the bill. We didn't mind not having whistles and bells, or the complaints about the battery life, because of the advertised selling points being waterproof and shockproof. Then he accidently left it in his shorts pocket before getting in the pool. He may have been in for 5 minutes before he realized it was still on him. No problem, I said, it's waterproof! Noticed the inside of the screen was foggy looking. Turned it on and the display pixelized. Well, crap. Put it in an airtight container with rice for three days. Now, it comes on but you can't type anything into it, such as a text message or phone number. I need to find out how to contact the seller to see if they will honor the 1 year manufacturer warranty. Can not tell you guys how disappointing this is.

Phone looks to be built like a tank
Phone looks to be built like a tank. But the water sealing does not work well. Maybe it withstands a short immersion in a glass of water, but it failed in the real swimming pool. I tried to film my children swimming, but after leaving the swimming pool the touchscreen stopped to respond. I immediately removed the battery and I saw several drops of water in the battery compartment. Both immersion indicators in battery compartment turned red and water condensation appeared on the front camera cover. After one-week drying the touchscreen appears to work again. Nevertheless, the phone should not be regarded as waterproof.
