Naked Spur, The (blu-ray)

When I saw Warner Brothers' Archives was releasing "The Naked Spur" on blu-ray, I preordered right away simply because I was so excited. I've bought a few other Archives' BD releases, and their video quality is excellent—at least to my mind and eyes. I never saw "The Naked Spur" on DVD, but I saw it via two different streaming networks (both decent ones), and it looked rather murky, which is one reason I never sprang for the DVD. The blu-ray arrived yesterday, and I am thrilled with it. Compared to what I've seen, the film looks fantastic: clear, colorful, with nice depth. I'm so happy I bought it! Because emotions are so important in this film, and sometimes subtle, visual clarity is very important, and in watching the blu-ray, I felt the force of the film more strongly than I've ever felt it before. The audio is very good too, although mono (DTS-HD 2.0), with voices clear and dialogue understandable.As for the film itself, this is directed by Anthony Mann, a guy of genuine depth and social consciousness whose films tend to possess a moral depth, an ethical strata. In "The Naked Spur," Jimmy Stewart's bounty hunter and Civil War vet, Howard Kemp, tracks down a Kansas murderer in the Colorado Rockies, intent on bringing him to justice for a $5000 reward—what Howard believes will turn his life around after a serious betrayal and the loss of his ranch during his time away at war. Robert Ryan is the murderer, Ben Vandergroat, who comes with a former partner's lovely and toughly capable young daughter, Lina, played Janet Leigh; Ben has a mind that never stops calculating and a manner that can range from frightfully harsh to humorously amiable—the latter end of that range more common, though, and lending him charisma. Toss into this mix two more characters—Jesse, an old prospector (the obligatory stock character in so many Westerns) and a morally ambiguous Union soldier, Anderson (discharged dishonorably)—and you have your basic cast: three men who, as it quickly turns out, will have to split a bounty; the bounty head who knows greed can be a powerful weakness in men; and a young likable woman, struggling with loyalties and seemingly lost to the whims of fate, who honestly elicits sympathy (at least she did from me).Across the boards, the acting is terrific. Robert Ryan is utterly on key, an amazing actor who deserved far more respect and kudos than he ever publicly received. Jimmy Stewart is fantastic as always, injecting a darkness into his character that he was so beautifully capable of (cf. Vertigo, Rope, and several other films in the 1950s). Here, his depth is especially notable. He thus has a great foil (and to an ambiguous degree, twin) in Ryan, and it's an intense meeting of forces.All in all, the blu-ray bowled me over right to the end, where the climax was more moving than ever before. Thank goodness Warner Archives did this for The Naked Spur: a great Western, a great film of any genre—and with a screenplay that was nominated for an Oscar, the rare time that has happened for a Western.

James Stewart made a number of classic Western films, mostly for director Anthony Mann, and this is one of the more unusual ones. Typically, there was extensive location shooting in Colorado and California. Through the use of vivid Technicolor, this film is visually quite impressive and memorable.The remarkable thing about this thrilling film is that there are basically only five actors in the story. Mann presumably used some Native Americans for a rather brutal and troubling encounter with a band of "Indians" that ends tragically for those unnamed individuals after they pose a significant threat to the five individuals.Jimmy is essentially a bounty hunter who tracks down a killer, portrayed by Robert Ryan. The wanted man is accompanied by a young woman, portrayed by Janet Leigh, who doesn't realize that the man she loves is not whom she thinks. There is, of course, a substantial reward for bringing Ryan to justice, where he will likely be hung (in Abilene, Kansas). The challenge is getting Ryan back to Kansas, especially since the two other men have questionable views about sharing the reward. There is an internal conflict between Jimmy and the others. The story conflict because Ryan tries basically to "divide and conquer" everyone, hoping that he and Janet Leigh can somehow get away and go to California for a new life.The impressive film, with its continuing conflicts, is enhanced by a fine musical by MGM staff composer and conductor Bronislaw Kaper. As in other Westerns, Jimmy uses the amazing horse Pie, who can be identified by the distinctive white spot on his forehead. This was actually the third film that Jimmy made for Anthony Mann and it is definitely one of the best.

The Naked Spur was the third of five Westerns director Anthony Mann would make with Jimmy Stewart in the first half of the '50's. These works stand alongside Stewart's 50's films with Hitchcock as going along way to revise his "aw shucks," light comic persona. For Hitchcock, Stewart played obsessive, neurotic characters; for Mann he was that too, with an added capacity for violence that is as convincingly portrayed as is is unexpected. Looking at both ends of Stewart's emotional spectrum by watching The Naked Spur and Vertigo alongside Mr Smith Goes To Washington bears out fully Andrew Sarris' accolade -- Stewart was the most complete actor in classical Hollywood.In Spur, Stewart plays Howie Kemp, once a normal farmer who probably had a moral compass; but a series of set-backs leading to the the loss of his ranch has left him at the end of his tether -- to get himself out of a financial hole, he has turned bounty hunter, stalking a former friend, a career criminal, who shot a sheriff and now has a substantial reward hanging over his head -- dead or alive.At the film's start, Stewart is alone in the wilderness, and close to catching his quarry. But by the time he apprehends him, and has to make the long journey back to civilization, he had acquired unwillingly a couple of partners who facilitate the capture and now mean to share in the spoils: Ralph Meeker, as a sociopathic cavalry officer, dishonorably discharged for raping an Indian (and the tribe is on his trail, and hence on Stewart's as well); and a kindly but greedy old prospector (Millard Mitchell).And the quarry? Robert Ryan, at his menacing best. Bound and immobile for most of the film, his barbed humor and disarming good nature disguise a truly dangerous man -- dangerous because he knows all of his captors weaknesses, and plays them off against each other, using his words as weapons only until he gets the chance to get his hands on an actual gun. When he is caught, he is accompanied by a semi-feral young woman, played by Janet Leigh, the daughter of one of his slain associates with whom Ryan has some sort of ambiguous relationship, somewhere between lover and surrogate father; when Ryan sees Stewart is attracted to her, he will use that too as a weapon.Mann stages this journey employing the rocky barren landscape as another protagonists; he relishes having his actors climbing sheer rock faces, fording rapids, digging themselves into the earth to shield themselves from bullets. The extremity of the characters struggle with the landscape mirrors the emotional extremes they are subjected to.Stewart plays here a paranoid, bitter, vindictive man, for whom the pursuit of blood money has become an obsession. The fact that this goal is at odds with the moral person he once was leads him to the edge of hysteria; he screams like a woman, rages, menaces, bullies. And he pulls it off beautifully. Mann once said at the end of any of his films, his heroes are more exhausted then exalted. As in The Wages of Fear, these movies, particularly Spur, are ordeals, and we and the characters are spared nothing. This movie,like the others in the cycle, is among the toughest, and darkest westerns to come out of Hollywood.

邦題『裸の拍車』1868年コロラド州のロッキー山中。アビリーンから来たケンプ(ジェームズ・スチュアート)が、ならず者ヴァンダーグロート(ロバート・ライアン)を追跡していた。ついにヴァンダーグロートの居場所を突き止めたケンプは、たまたま知り合った金鉱掘りの老人テイト(ミラード・ミッチェル)と元騎兵隊大尉、アンダーソン(ラルフ・ミーカー)の助けを借り、ヴァンダーグロートと彼の情婦パッチ(ジャネット・リー)を捕える。ケンプは、一人でヴァンダーグロートをアビリーンへ連れ戻すつもりだったが、テイトとアンダーソンに高額の懸賞金のことを知られてしまい、5人の奇妙な旅が始まる…。アンソニー・マン監督とジェームズ・スチュアートが組んだ5本の西部劇のうちの3本目。マン監督の西部劇らしい、暗く屈折した人物を主人公に据えた複雑妙味の傑作だ。フランスの映画評論界の巨人、アンドレ・バザンは、脚本が完璧であるとして、ジョン・フォードの『 捜索者 』と並んで、戦後西部劇の中でも屈指の作品と評している。サイレント期のウィリアム・S・ハートのように、さめざめと泣くことを一種のお約束場面にしていたヒーローは例外として(バスター・キートンは、それを徹底的にパロディにしていた)、正義感に溢れ、どこまでも強いのが西部劇のヒーローと相場が決まっている。しかし、マン西部劇のヒーローは、その正反対。暗いトラウマを抱え、自分の欲望によってつき動かされ、時には涙すら流す。およそ西部劇の主人公にはふさわしくない弱い人間。そんな主人公で、とうてい西部劇が成り立つとは思えないのだが、それを鋭く深い人間観察と生々しく突発的な暴力描写で、実に複雑で魅力的な一編に仕上げるのがマン監督なのだ。彼の厳しく緊密ながら繊細な演出で描かれる西部劇は、いつも力強くて、観応え十分。マン監督は、ケンプのささくれ立った心情を視覚化したような、切り立った崖、川の激流などの峻厳な西部的景観を背景に(そして、暴力に曝されながら)、彼が、人間的な心を取り戻すまでの魂の漂泊の旅を感動的に描いてみせる。卑小で、あまりに人間臭いヒーローだからこそ、典型的なタフな西部劇の主人公とは違い、感情移入、共感しやすいということもあるだろう。観る者は、最初はケンプという人物の屈折して複雑な造形に戸惑うが、いつしか、この弱く脆い主人公を理解しようという気になる。劇場公開時より、現代でこそ、より受け容れられやすい人物像かもしれない。マン監督の的確な演出に応えて、スチュアートを始め、5人の演技陣(ライアン、ミッチェル、ミーカー、リー)が、深みある素晴らしい演技をみせている。それぞれのむきだしの感情がぶつかり合って(それでいて、決してオーバー・アクトではなく)渦巻き、それが作品に何とも言えない緊張感、ねじれた関係性を生じさせて行く様は、実にスリリング。素晴らしい演出と演技が緊密に結びついていると言えるだろう。バザンが傑作と評するのも納得の出来だ。本DVDは、35mm原版よりテレシネ、レストアされたマスターを使用したもの。キズやコマ飛びなどはないものの、残念ながら、肝心のカラーが褪色気味で、全体的にディテールも甘い、ぼやけた画質。本DVD発売の数年前に、アメリカでは、鮮烈なカラー具合のプリントが上映されたという話もあるので、この画質の悪さの原因は謎だ。音声は明瞭で特に問題なし。英語字幕も収録。特典には、本作の予告編、デイヴ・オブライエンが、現代家具(51年当時の)の機能に四苦八苦する姿を描いた短編コメディ"Things We Can Do Without"とリタイヤしたB29爆撃機が、ジェット機時代に取り残されるという、テックス・エイヴリーの楽しい短編アニメ"Little Johnny Jet"が収録。本DVDは、北米盤ながら、R-All(厳密には、1〜4)仕様なので、日本のR-2 プレーヤーで、問題なく視聴可能。残念ながら、日本語字幕入りのヴィデオが、93年にワーナー・ホーム・ビデオから発売されて以降、正規日本盤DVDは発売されていないので(ジュネス企画のものは、もちろん正規ライセンス盤ではない)、この北米盤が、映画ファンにとっての1枚ということになるだろう。 捜索者

Vor ca. gut 30-35 Jahre das letzte Mal gesehen, war "The naked spur" ein spannend inszeniertes Western-Psychogramm, enttäuschte mich aber nun einmal mehr dieser Anthony-Mann-Film.Wie schon bei " Der Mann aus dem Westen [Blu-ray ]", der in seiner Stimmung zwar klasse rüber kommt, ist für mich auch hier -im heute- das dramaturgische "Timing" und die Ausarbeitung der dramaspielenden Protagonisten nicht mehr so überzeugend.Mann-Western (und besonders seine Versuche im Monumentalgenre " El Cid (Digital Remastered) [Blu-ray ]" und/oder auch " Der Untergang des Römischen Reiches (Digital Remastered) [Blu-ray ]"), die zwar alle bombastisch gefilmt sind, aber sich -für heutige Maßstäbe- mehr quälend durch ihre Handlung drücken, sind zwar handwerklich glänzend bearbeitet (Location, Kamera, Ausstattung etc.), doch brechen die Wandlungen der Charaktere zu abrupt ab bzw. taumeln, ohne großen dramaturgischen Bruch, fallen für den Zuschauer urplötzlich, in ihren inneren Kampf, von ein Extrem ins andere. Den dafür erhältlichen Grund des abrupten Wandels -besonders in der deutschen Synchro- scheint zwar plausibel, doch nie recht ausgearbeitet, auf den Punkt gebracht (evtl. fehlt auch die ein oder andere dramaturgische Szene in den -deutschen- Fassung; sind der Schere zum Opfer gefallen).Zu schnell etwa erfüllt sich grenzenloser Hass in Nachsicht. Nach ein oder zwei kurzen Sätzen der Liebsten und einem Moment des Innehaltens, werden die dunklen Seiten, die Beweggründe Stewarts, einfach getilgt. Das wirkt heute stakkatohaft, unglaubwürdig, überzogen, kitschig. Dabei gleitet hier, in "Nackte Gewalt", Stewarts theatralische Schauspiel haarscharf auf der Naht. Seine mehr als übertrieben hupfender Gang, hervorgerufen von der Schussverletzung, sein hin- und herschleudern des Kopfes bzw. des ganzen Oberkörpers, wenn er zu Boden gerungen wird, seine weit aufgerissen tellergroßen Augen, die all den Wahn, den Hass, sein Übermannen, interpretieren sollen, dies wirkt -im heute- zu "klassisch", erinnert an gute Volkstheaterinterpretation, im folkloristischen Alpenpanorama Colorados.Ebenfalls wirken im On-Location-Kammerspiel zwei der fünf Darsteller fehl. Janet Leigh, mit wasserstoffblondierten Bubikopf, geht als Kindfrau, im harten Gebirgsdrama, regelrecht baden. Schlimmer noch der gestriegelte, pornobremsetragende Ralph Meeker, als aus der Armee unehrenhaft Entlassener. Die Schauspieler pass(t)en hier einfach nicht in ihre Rollen; das war zweite Wahl (genau wie die Rolle der Loren in Manns "El Cid", die eigentlich Senta Berger spielen sollte und viel typgerechter gewesen wär).Natürlich bleibt in der Story(line) genug Spannung, um den alten Westernliebhaber auch heute noch bei der Stange zu halten. So bleibt auch trotz des Alters "Nackte Gewalt" ein harter Western. Nicht dass das Gezeigte -zumindest 60 Jahre danach- äußerst brutal dargestellt wird, nein, sondern die geradlinig erzählte Geschichte ist gnadenlos in ihrer Aussage und bedingungslos zu den Personen. So gesehen schlummert in den Mann-Stewart-Western schon die italienische Variante des Westerners, die erst zehn Jahre später die Kinosaäle flutete.Auch Manns photografische Arbeit zählt ebenso zu den positiven Seiten des Films, ist -trotz seines 4:3-Formates- excellent abgelichtet und bietet Atmosphäre pur. In kaum einen anderen Film aus dem Genre, als in den Western Manns, verschmilzt Cowboy, Pferd und Landschaft zu einem "Natural".Doch wiederum gerade jenes, was Anthony Mann uns zeigen wollte, die Psychologie der gebrochenen Figuren, funktioniert heute nicht mehr so treffend, so reibungslos, als es evtl. noch die -stark?- zensierten 50er-Jahrefilme zuließen. Andersherum frag ich mich, ob die Western Manns nicht ihrer Zeit voraus waren und überhaupt von der breiten Masse der 50er Jahre Zuschauer überhaupt so verstanden worden sind, wie es uns die Kritiker heute weiß machen.Immerhin, die klassische Story, vom dem vom Hass getriebenen Stewart, ergäbe auch heute ein packendes und damit hervorragendes Remake.Ferner zu meiner Kritik, drückt die gesehene DVD-Ausgabe mächtig auf die Wertung.Das Bild ist ähnlich matschig wie Fords genialer " Der Sieger " (zum Vergleich, und 12 Jahre älter, sollte man " Verfluchtes Land " heranziehen, denn ich letzten sah. Was dort auf einer "nur" DVD möglich ist, im Blu-ray-Zeitalter, ist erstaunlich). Den dumpfen -deutschen- Ton nimmt man als Liebhaber des Genres in Kauf, könnte aber auch eine Generalüberholung vertragen.Schade auch bzw. enttäuschend, denn ich dachte in Erinnerung zu haben, dass Stewart hier seine -meisterliche- Stimme des Siegmar Schneider trägt. Weit gefehlt, denn Jimmy wird hier von Horst Niendorf (des öfteren für Hackman und Lancaster im Einsatz) synchronisiert. Nicht das Niendorf seine Sache als alter Sprecherhase schlecht erledigt, nein, das nicht. Ist es halt nur enttäuschend, dass es nicht Schneider ist.Summa summarum: einhergehend mit den -technischen- DVD-Mängeln nur knappe 3 Sterne! Ich bin zufrieden

Uno de los inolvidables westerns que protagonizara James Stewart a las órdenes del gran Anthony Mann. Excelente trazado de personajes (todos ellos brillantemente interpretados) que ahonda hábilmente en su psicología, antecediendo el soberbio ciclo de films del Oeste confeccionado por Budd Boetticher junto a Randolph Scott. Un clásico indispensable para los amantes del género, justamente nominado al Oscar al mejor guión en 1954.La calidad de la IMAGEN es floja en general. Poca definición y escasa solidez en el colorido. Una pena, la verdad. El formato en el que se presenta la película es el original de filmación 1.37:1.Por lo que respecta al sonido, puede elegirse entre el doblaje al castellano con el que se estrenó la película en los cines españoles en 1956, algo limitado en su fidelidad pero aún plenamente disfrutable (oh, aquellas voces...), o la también monofónica, pero más nítida, versión original en inglés. Existe la posibilidad de activar unos subtítulos (amarillos) en castellano (con diversos errores, especialmente al escribir los nombres de los personajes) o en portugués (sin los errores del subtitulado español).No hay CONTENIDOS EXTRA de ningún tipo; ni siquiera un triste trailer. En la carátula se reproduce la atractiva (y algo exagerada) ilustración del cartel americano, mientras que la contracarátula exhibe la pintura realizada por Jano para el cartel español de la reposición.A modo de anécdota, cabe destacar que en el doblaje español el personaje interpretado por James Stewart dice llamarse "Colorado Jim" (como se tituló la película en nuestro país), mientras que en la versión original ese nombre no se pronuncia en ningún momento. Stewart se llama "Howard Kemp" y los demás personajes se refieren a él como "Howie", no "Jim", como sucede en la versión doblada. El título original es "The naked spur" (La espuela desnuda), en referencia a un momento clave en el desarrollo del film.

A class act and true gentleman, ‘Naked Spur” is one of his best!
