This is a seemingly popular, yet controversial item based upon the reviews. I am giving this a 5-Star rating. Here's why: *This was delivered to my door at the price of $39.99 plus tax. (A deal compared to plastic holders) *It was well packaged. All shelving parts were included as were hardware parts and assembly instructions. *The unit went together perfectly. I didn't have to re-drill or fix anything. The finish was clean, undamaged...no defects. *Upon assembly I had a perfectly fine, solid media tower sitting in the corner of my office...where space is limited. (NOTE - I Am using this strictly for CD storage): When assembled there are 9 enclosed shelfs; in addition you have the top of the piece for more storage. I placed an additional plastic CD storage rack (30 more CDs) on top...no use in wasting a nice flat surface. Included is a set of anchors for anchoring to a wall if need be. The listing claims it will hold 261 CDs. That would be 29 single CDs in standard jewel cases per shelf. I will tell you that you won't want to do that. IF, you indeed get the 29th CD stuffed into the shelf, you'll be annoyed every time you want to pull out an item from the tightly jammed shelf. Accept that it will hold a total of 252 CDs (28 single CDs per shelf) and you will be content. Of course, CD packaging comes in a variety of flavors such as cardboard boxes, thin cases, etc., so numbers will vary. Based on many the bad reviews I have read, I will say this: I figure you have two choices when assembling this kit: 1) Dive in, don't pre-arrange you parts, don't read the instructions carefully...or at all and come out with a poorly built item and a bad attitude. Or, 2) Arrange all the parts needed in an orderly fashion, read the instructions to get familiar with what you are assembling and then carefully proceed. If you aren't familiar with wood working...or in this case...particle board, you DO NOT WANT TO DRIVE THE SCREWS HOME WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT. You will crumble the particle board. Just snug the screws up...no power necessary. If you want real wood...then pay for real wood shelving. Don't buy this unit. IT IS PARTICLE BOARD. I have probably assembled 30 to 40 pieces of furniture/shelving kits in my time. This one went together as smoothly as any brand I have worked with. If you're really familiar with things like this, you'll be done in under an hour. If not, put on some music, relax and enjoy the project knowing how organised you will feel when finished! Again, I am quite pleased with this unit - both the price and the quality I got for the price. Just remember, the finished product is up to you. UPDATE: I purchased a second unit. Again, all came together perfectly. This size is great for those small spaces! UPDATE: It is now June 2019 and I have my 4th unit. Again - it went together perfectly. Very happy with this.

I now own 3 Atlantic media shelving units! 2 of these particular "single sized" (Atlantic 74735728) shelving units, and one of the "double sized" ones (Atlantic PN38435720). I first bought the double sized one back in 2018, and have a positive review of that unit on here already. It has held up fine and moved with me once even. The first small one I bought was in 2020 and has held up for those years fine as well, so I have no fear for the new one I just received. I am careful and haven't broken any of them myself. In my lengthy review of the bigger double one, I pointed out that you must be CAREFUL with these particle board/"wood composite" products though, and that will always be the case. There is even a chance that they will come already broken from transit, and in that case you just return/replace using Amazon's procedures. To date, with all 3 units I've bought I have not had one come broken yet, so that's a plus. Atlantic flat packs them quite well. These units are not very deep, since they are designed specifically for DVD/Bluray/CD cases to be retrievable. Because of this, they are very... tilty... and want to fall backwards even when empty. They have always come with wall anchors to fasten them directly into your walls, so if you have any fear of them falling then use those. I would NOT trust any of these units to stand on their own without something to lean them back against though. You can see a 4th unit standing alone and away from the wall in my picture here (furthest left shelf), and it is NOT one of these Atlantics. Notice that one is built differently, and has longer feet front and back to allow it to stand alone with or without weight. The Atlantics WILL NOT do this. So I would lean them back against the wall, and if you wish use the provided anchors to keep them there. If there is an earthquake or something I'm sure they could topple forward. Remember these are CHEAP units, and you get what you pay for. So like I have mentioned just be careful when handling and building them. They aren't hard to build, just don't over tighten screws or you could break the cheap composite boards. If you are looking for nicer solid wood shelving you most likely will never find it for this price point. You would probably have to buy some more expensive bookcase to get better quality, so unless you want to go that route these composite shelves are what you're going to end up with. I checked other major stores online like... the orange hardware store, the blue and yellow electronics store, and of course the Swedish furniture store just to see what was out there to compare. Both the hardware store and electronics stores had Atlantic shelving for sale online, and one had another company that looked almost the same for a little more expensive. The furniture store of course has their own modular shelving units, but I'm sure you all know they have a similar quality of products for things like book shelves. Those will be larger though, with deeper shelves that won't display movie cases as nicely IMO, and won't be as retrievable. The Swedish store's shelving units all seem to be more expensive than Atlantic as well, especially if they're more solidly built. Long story short: if you're looking for SPECIFICALLY movie storage like I am, these are the go-to choice for the money, and multiple online stores sell Atlantic shelving. If you think you want thicker or deeper storage, or regular sized bookcases maybe look somewhere else. And if you need SOLID wood quality then definitely look elsewhere.

If you are looking for inexpensive DVD, Blu-ray and/or CD storage, this is it! I bought two of these for my growing Blu-ray and existing DVD collection and have them on either side of a similarly colored desk in my home office. Pros: - Excellent pricing - Easy setup/assembly - 6 Adjustable shelves - 2 Fixed shelves - Compact (fits in a variety of places, either together or separate) Cons: - Shelves were designed for maximum use by CD cases, not Blu-ray or DVD (even less so for DVDs) - Excess particle board splintering inside locking cam-bolts(?) - Instability while putting together can lead to breakage (if you're not careful) With that, I can say that I am VERY pleased with these units. Despite some reviews stating that they fell apart or were shoddily crafted pieces of junk, I found them quite the opposite. Especially as they are laminated particle board. As such, here is how I made sure they were as solid as could be: - Clean out the cam bolt holes of all excess particle board splinters and mis-drilled pieces! (then blow it out with your breath or a can of compressed air to make sure no little pieces are in the holes) - This allows the cams to fit into their holes properly, assuring a good lock on the cam, when tightened) - Use glue! - Specifically in the dowel holes! - Elmer's glue or wood glue works perfectly. - Squirt a little bit into each hole that the dowels connect into. (You'll quickly learn how much is needed after the first two) Be sure to keep a moistened washcloth handy to wipe up any extra glue! - After putting the unit together, be sure to go back one last time and make sure the cam bolts are tight! - When putting on the backing, the best place to do so is on a set of stairs (at the top, of course) so that the "foot" portion that keeps these units stable is not holding the rest of the unit in the air, creating a break hazard!

I have bought about two dozen of these Atlantic Oskar Media Towers over the past two years for a media library. They do work well for the job, are not difficult to assemble, and better than most others than I have found, however, I have found a few small caveats of which you may have concerns. 1. I have had trouble with the cardboard backs separating from the shelf. These backs give the shelf a great deal of strength and stability and are extremely necessary in making this a sturdy piece of furniture. The small nails supplied just do not do the job when nailed into the press board panels. After squaring the unit, I drilled small holes and used #6 metal screws to affix the backs. This was easy and worked very well. I got additional support by using wood glue on the ends of each wooden dowel before inserting them in each hole during the assembly instructions. The result was a tight, square, piece of furniture that I believe will last quite a while. 2. I don't know why, but do not expect shelves to be the same size, even if they are the same stock number. They will be similar, but not the same size. If you are going to attach several together, decide if you want the tops to be straight or the bottoms, you won't be able to have both. I opted for the tops and put shims under the bottoms. It is even worse if you order them at different times and worse yet if you order additional shelves a year later. 3. Also do not expect the single shelves to line up with the double shelving. Even though the measurements are close, it is not close enough to make it look good without using a table saw to re-saw the boards. 4. The thickness of the individual adjustable shelves can vary between lots from shelf to shelf. Luckily, I don't use all of my shelving and can move it around so it does not look too bad. Also, the shelves for the double units are not the same width as the single units. This will make an inexpensive installation of multiple shelving, but if you want it to look professional, I would look for something a little better. After I get my project done, and I know how many shelves that I will finally need, I plan on reordering 1 order of the same lot of a better shelving and getting rid of all of these mismatched pieces that I have accumulated over the past couple of years.

I have put many pieces of furniture together over the years. I do handyman work around the house too, putting up curtains, measuring and hanging shelves etc. So I'm not incompetent. But this was very difficult to put together, in large part because the pieces fit too loosely, and didn't always go together quickly and easily like they should. There are literally hundreds of parts, and while it is not difficult to figure out, it is tedious. But the worst part is that once I finally got it together - it took me two and a half hours! - as soon as I picked it up it came loose in one spot, and since I had already screwed and nailed it together, there was nothing I could do to fix it. Pulling the nails out to fix it would damage the low quality particle board. As you can see from the photos, the cheap particle board had holes that were often too big for the pegs so it did not fit together as tightly as it should. The back of the unit is made up of three pieces that are nothing more than glorified cardboard! If I had it to do over, I would go down to the local store and buy one of these where at least the the side pieces are all one piece instead of three each. And if when putting it together I found that the pieces were loose and falling apart, I would take it right back to the store. But fitting all these pieces back into the small box that they came in and having to return it to amazon, I decided to just keep the junk and replace it at some point in the future. After spending two and a half hours putting it together before I realized it wasn't even going to go together right, I did not want to have to take it apart and put it back in the box to return it. This is probably the worst junk I have ever bought on Amazon, and if I were Amazon I wouldn't even allow it to be sold. I would give this zero Stars if I could! Please see the photos I uploaded.

So based on the reviews and the 1 open box item I received, the building process is slightly confusing. I built 2 so far so I think I can help you avoid my mistakes: 1. The dowels do not need to be driven in with a hammer...ever. No yours weren't misaligned. Yes they go in those massive holes where they will be loose. You should be able to slide them in and out with ease. 2. They only really label one of a group of parts and the rest are just packaged with that part. You can usually tell orientation by looking at unfinished and finished sides. 3. Make sure you drive screws in as far as you can with just your hand first. You can usually get them fairly close to all the way in without a tool. If you can't, try re-seating the screw. I tried driving it with a screw driver the full way and it split the wood slightly. It never split when I hand screwed it almost all the way down. 4. More of a recommendation: When you get to step 6 where you are putting on the base (E): Skip to step 7 and hammer in the top G and H back panels while it can sit flat. Otherwise you will need to support the underside while you drive all the nails in. After that put the base on and then put on the final G panel. Back to the review: Do not buy this open box. I got a "Like New" and it was unbuild-able with broken parts. The people returning it for open box probably screwed up the dowels and drove them into the small holes so don't bother. Plus the finish is so cheap that if its not packaged like the original box, there will be scratches all over it. Just save yourself the time and buy new. Pros: -Looks fairly good. I recommend lighter colors if you are torn between multiple colors because the finish is cheap and it will be harder to tell if there are marks. I went black and I'm still happy with it. -Customizable shelves. This is also slightly a con see below. -Fairly easy construction simply because its a lot of repetitive steps. -If you are familiar with IKEA this will be fairly straight forward... but noticeably cheaper. -The back plate is one of the better pieces I've seen for cheaper furniture. Its thick and has pre-drilled holes for the nails. -Multiple look great side by side. Cons: -I'm not convinced these were worth $54. Definitely do not pay MSRP for these. -They are not the most structurally sound shelves. They will sit there just fine but I will be afraid if I ever have to move. -The shelves are not that symmetrical between segments. I set up the top and the middle section the same and one would fit an SNES cartridge and the other would rub on the cartridge. Minor and only an issue if you attempt to put tightly fitting shelves. - The instructions could use some zoomed in segments to clear up a few congested areas. - If you use this for anything bigger than a CD you will not be able to place both shelves in a segment. I wish they included the holes through the entire length of the segment so you could still use some of the extra space. -Only came with the required amount of Dowels. The dowels are very cheap. 1 set was fine but the other had one or two fall apart while picking them out of the bag. Luckily I had extras that worked well enough. -I wish they were taller. This is hardly a con because I knew based on the measurements. But after having them in place a few more inches would have done wonders. Overall they work. I do not need something super sturdy to just sit there and hold a few dvds/games. I will probably purchase more in the future simply because I already have them and they look good together. If I had to do it over again, I would have probably looked for a better solution though

We already own 3 of these that we are using to store our game collection and needed an additional for overflow. For the longest time the black in this size was unavailable so when it popped back up I put in the order. There's the slightest difference in the black finish color/texture from the original 2015 units and the new one sits ~1/8th of an inch taller, though at a general glance these differences are hardly noticeable. Assembly was quick ~15 minutes, though it's important to note that not all the pieces came with lettered stickers [A,B,C....] (So you may want to organize them so the marked pieces are used last for identification purposes, though as long as you make sure the peg holes are oriented on the top inside of each cubby and the finished trim is all facing forward you shouldn't have much trouble. The most difficult part is attaching the backing board and this will probably be the most time consuming step. The instructions had you do this last though the addition of the base makes it so the unit doesn't sit flat for nailing (though I found the full stack of the included shelves elevated it enough to be mostly level, you'll still pwant to do what you can to make sure each part is square and flush before nailing as this is what gives the end product most of its stability.) Comparing the 2015 models to the current version I can say they're now using a better quality tape to hinge the backing board and the nails are textured so they won't work their way out as easily. I had that issue when I originally moved the 3 older shelves across the country and they were very shakey when they arrived at the new location as most of the nails had already backed their way out but with a new set of nails and retightening of the cams they're as good as new. Once put together a row can fit a single set of 26 switch games, 20 PS3, 20 XBOX 360 games, 18 DS games, 22 3DS games, or 14 Super Nintendo games (technically 15 SNES but it will be really snug and difficult to pull out an individual game). Even though it's a fraction of an inch taller, it does fit the needed space nicely and it's just what we needed to organize some of our nerdy stuff.

Nice color (black is always my favorite color). Nice finish. I'd give ease of assembly about a 90% on a hundred scale but I'm no furniture builder. Instruction sheets are... sufficient. Tiny print so get out those reading glasses. I did not time myself, I just put on some music and built it. Some of the horizontal sturdiness comes from the tack on back boards. Six sheets, three sets of two folded and taped. On one, the tape was torn - which would be an incredibly petty thing to complain about - a strip of duct tape will fix that right up. The back sheets are tacked in place with small nails the instruction sheets call "screws" - again just a small translation glitch and not a problem. I read a review of something that suggested reinforcing the wooden dowels with some wood glue, so I did that. I assembled it laying it out on a table, section by section as instructed. Got everything in the right places and it all went together fairly easily. Feels sturdy, stands up straight, fits in the limited area where I needed it. The photo shows nine shelves of probably CD height. I bought it for DVDs and have six shelves (of about eleven inches wide each) with three shelves left over if I ever need a piece of 'wood' that size. Empty it's easy to lift or move. I haven't filled it yet but I assume it will be sturdy enough to prevent my cat from knocking it over. The price seemed fair for the item, it fills a need, I'm happy with the purchase.

Not sure why all the negative reviews, this is a great shelf for the price. So long as you have half a brain assembly is simple, did not have any issues with breakage of any parts.

Strong media cabinet, the key is the unit is narrow so the shelves don't droop under the weight like a wider shelf would. I can put 30 cds on a shelf x 9 shelves = 270 cds. DVDs and blue rays are taller so there will be fewer shelves.It was easy to assemble but when you nail the back on start at the bottom and work your way up. I started at the top and the back panel was about 2 or 3 millimeters too long, making the shelf ever so slightly wobbly, I had to cut a little off that panel, but it wouldn't matter at the top because you would never see it up there. I recommend this cabinet, good price too with free shipping
