The holes on the sides are 2 millimeter then on the bottom is 3 millimeter

It does not have a chain; but it has a fold-down handle that is a little less than 2" long. It snaps into place whether down or up. NB: This is not a tea strainer. It's taller than a soda can and more than an inch wider. (Some buyers who don't read details are shocked by its size.)

Is this a very fine mesh or will small pieces of tea leaves escape the container, please?

Small tea leaves will escape. You will need to strain your tea again. I use a coffee filter to strain mine.

Will this fit through a 4 inch diameter opening? I'm afraid the latches will hit.

It definitely will NOT fit. The hinge and latch increase the diameter to 4.5 inches.

I use this to hold bones to make soup. It's the best I've ever used and a great size for a family sized batch of soup.

I hope you have a large stew pot. This is a terrific product, and holds all the skins, pieces of veg, etc. that I want flavor from, but not left directly in my stew. It is bigger than I thought, but I have a big stew pot, so it works well for me. This cleans up nicely; I put it directly in the dishwasher.
