Is your sand soft?

The simple answer is definitely, yes!

I'd love to explain more though, because our sand is something we're very proud of.

Interestingly, not all sand is the same. Whilst it may look similar, our sand is crushed from a specifically chosen rock (in North America) to avoid contaminants, free quartz or free silica. Plus, it goes through strict annual safety checks (We want to avoid any nasties from our sand). We spent a lot of time finding the perfect sand supplier, to be sure we were offering sand that was both safe, and perfect for Zen Gardens. So whilst our sand isn't the cheapest, we can be confident of its quality...and that's really important to us here at Island Falls Home.

Finally, after choosing our supplier, we tested out various sand grain sizes. Again, not all sand is the same. (Some is fine & some coarse). We've a great relationship with our supplier and have chosen what we believe to be the optimal sand grain size for use in Zen Gardens. The patterns show up clearly, which makes a real difference. You will even see a very slight sparkle!

Question 2

Is it possible to add water to the garden? To create a pond?

Hello and thank you for your question. Our Zen Gardens comprise of soft white sand in a wooden ray, with a multitude of features. Whilst you wouldn't be able to add water directly, I would suggest perhaps looking to see if you can add a small "basin" of some sort, or alternatively (if realism is less important), you may wish to add an imitation pond. Our Zen Gardens do come with 6 beautifully handcrafted rakes, which allow you to create a variety of effects in the sand, including rippling water effects.

I've never used a zen garden before.  Are they easy to use and will it really look like the pictures?

Hello there. Thanks so much for your questions!

The great thing about a Zen Garden is that it can be whatever you want it to be. Enclosed within the gift tissue paper, within our giftable boxes, you'll find all of the tools and features you need to really make it your own. There are 6 different bamboo tools which each allow you to create a different pattern in the sand. Even as a beginner, I think you'll be surprised by what you can quickly and easily create, even if (like me) you're not particularly artistic!

You may like to copy the designs pictured in our product images, or maybe you'll gain inspiration from the photos in reviews left by our many happy customers.

Finally, browse the enclosed color guide, which talks you through what all the features mean. Placing your Bridge, Pagoda, Torii Gate and Rocks (and the other features!) within your raked landscape will really bring it to life.
