Works great! Only needs one grounding rod!
Just an update that might help someone on this last one that I installed. I used the copper grounding rod, again only one Rod needed, versus the Galvanized steel rod that I used on my first fence. The copper gives a better energy to the fence, it gives a better shock. Obviously nothing thatโs gonna hurt any of the animals. My horse is terrified of the fence even if thereโs not an electric fence charger attached to it. But keeping out other animals, dear raccoons etc. I just feel that the copper rod performs much better. Iโve dabbled with electric fences, both solar and electric over the last few years never being actually very successful due to the multiple rods. I was a little skeptical when I read this one only needed the one grounding rod and thatโs it. Thereโs a wire with a large alligator clip at the end that attaches to the box itself and then it clipped right into the fence. It is true, it does work exactly that way. You need get a grounding rod from Loweโs or Home Depot pound it into the ground, I did mine with about 4 foot left above the ground, attached the electric fence box, tighten the end to the box onto the pole, screw the nut and wire onto the back of the box, then clip it onto the tape, cord or wire whichever you put up and you have a working electric fence. Quick and easy. I actually just bought a second one for another area on my property thatโs very far away. Probably would work but I donโt want to run that much fencing or poles. You have to put it a sunny place just like any other solar items, even when we had about a week of cloudy rainy days it had no problem with holding a charge. It worked every day. I highly recommend this electric fence option

Great unit, one year later with no issues
I've had this electric fence energized for nearly a year and it has work flawlessly the entire time. I am using this to protect a grove of fruit trees from my local neighborhood deer who will eat nearly every plant in my yard. This electric fence energizer has kept the deer out completely. I have 5 strands of wire, approximately 75' long each. The solar aspect is great and has kept me from having to run power out to the fence. Another great aspect is that the grounding rod acts as the support for the energizer and has an alligator clip from the positive and just clips on to the wire. I never have turned the unit off, just simply disconnect the alligator clip and address my trees. Highly recommended and will most likely buy another once I get another garden set up

Working well. Had it 2.5 years. Hurts like hell!
Just upgraded the review to 5.0 after running into the fence last week! Was walking in the yard looking up at the cherry trees and my thigh connected the live wire to the ground wire! Holy $@%#! That defintely got my attention! Hurt like hell! Adding a ground wire makes all the difference. I've bumped into the live wire before and experienced mild undesireable pain, but nothing like this! This was some extreme pain. I'm highly confident that this energizer would scare deer away. And, actually the results speak for themselves. No deer get near our bushes, trees, or our flower gardens. Highly recommend this product. But, if adding a ground wire to your fence, be very careful not to run into it. --- Original review below -- We live in a deer super highway, a clearing in the woods between the forest and the river. The deer like to gather and sleep here. The yard is all torn up. Trees regularly get stripped of their bark. But, the gardens, including delicious spring tulips, hostas, lilies, roses, and other tasty treats have not been eaten at all since using this energizer. Used the energizer and 3+ foot some step in stakes to fence off my flower gardens. Goal was to prevent deer and rabbits from ruining the garden. The step in stakes have at least five places to attach wire. i started off with hot wires on the top (1) and bottom levels (5). The deer leaned over it and then left. Found the wire stretched and some footprints inside the garden but nothing eaten. I added two ground wires at the 2 and 4 positions on the stakes. The grounds go back to the grounding stake. When an animal touches the hot and ground, they complete the circuit and get zapped. Since making this improvement, we haven't had a deer get near our gardens. Rabbits are still able to jump between the hot and ground and get into the garden. I haven't seen any appear to get shocked. But, often they just run around the outside. So, i suspect the fence has had some effect on them. To improve my system, I should get a longer grounding rod. Current one is thin and only three feet. The natural soil here is mostly sand and gravel. Will buy another energizer today. Have a bunch of young trees to plant. Need to keep the deer off untl they mature a bit. Definitely recommend the product for deer.

Garden protected.
My wife worked really hard on a raised garden that looked great....only to have it destroyed by racoons over just a few nights. I added this S12 and 3 rows of wire. No more racoon problem....or deer. This is super convenient, easy to use and very effective. Only issue I have is you can't tell the battery level from the panel...25%, 50%, 100%...who knows? Also, it would be great if it had an alternate USB charging option to top it off occasionally. I have not had a problem with it failing to work with just the sun but it would be nice to know if it was getting low on charge and have an option for extended cloudy days. Overall great product....almost perfect.

Never going back to another brand
Easy setup. Charge for 2 days in the sun before using. No need for a whole 3 rod grounding system, just attach it to 1 grounding rod, connect to the fence and move on. Will use Gallagher for any future electric fencing needs.

Not one, but two duds..back to back
First, when you go to install these, the size ground you can hammer in the ground is limited to something really narrow in circumference. The thing SHOULD easily mount to FENCE POSTS (T style) but no...you gota find something special and more flimsy... Otherwise was okay setting up, and worked rather well for almost exactly one year. It is as if they have a self destruct inside them or something, both of the ones I ordered just went capooit , and they did so in the same order I bought them. See, I bought one, liked it at first, bought another one like one month later. They failed in that order, and in about that same amount of time...so ME smells a rat.... I dibbled in electronics my adult life, and sure enough inside it looks like a 555 timer, or some sort of T Chip...I suspect T for Timer, but I cannot say that for certain...it COULD BE just a crazy coincidence, but either way...read on... So, once open I see a battery, likely the problem right...so I order one, and sure enough the thing goes back to working...But DOESNT CHARGE ...so if there is a timer counting down, what it kills is the charge system, and this is true of BOTH of them that I bought...neither of them would recharge.... VERY DISATISFIED and recommend you shop elsewhere...or suffer the same fate. IF you only need it for a camping trip to keep critters away or something like that...maybe you get it...but I won't be buying another one... NUF SED

This was my first one
I love the Gallagher solar battery fence chargers I now have 3. This little one is guarding a small area of my garden from rabbits. Its the easiest to install and the green light has been constant, even after it sat in the shed for a year between uses.

Small size but pack a punch
This device is small and solidly built. It is very easy to install and self explanatory. I use it to electrify my chicken netting. I am confident my flock will be contained within the perimeter of the fence. Above all, I am confident this device will protect my flock from ground predators. Around here we have: foxes, coyotes, raccoons, dogs, lynxs and cougars.
