I always have one out front, so I can be noisey and see how much rain actually fell. I like the unit but.... The problem is that if it then freezes overnight it cracks. I have been through 3 of these.

I was looking for a way to track how much water my lawn was getting and this does the job. The free-floating red plastic piece always sticks to the side instead of floating on top of the water so I can read the level from my window, but that’s ok.

This gauge is awesome. Just stick it in the ground, or in a large plant pot that the plant isn't going to obstruct rainfall, and you are set. I've found that with our lovely NC clay soil, and rainfalls that tend to be gullywashers vs. light summer rains, the mud can bounce up and land in side the gauge, leaving it mucky and then hard to read. I just bring it in, fit it with water and a little electric dishwasher detergent, let it sit a bit, and then use a bottle brush to clean it out. Good as new. Speaking of which, I wonder if Rain-X would help keep this from happening? If I try it, I'll let you know!
