Crow

i lovvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvve crows and their allies and Ted Hughes was probably part of the reason Sylvia Plath committed suicide but i appreciate his poetry everyone should read this book and pbs has had a program that was about crows but had ted hughes quoting his blacker than a crow poetry he was great britains poet laureate with good reason ( ms plath was his wife) humans have a blacker heart than any crow ever did but like all things black, they are a target for human ignorance prejudice i am white but while collecting crow stuff i learned a lot about african american history as black persons were depicted as crows in old ads etc and the jim crow laws etc read it

These poems are unique in the history of English literature and indeed, within the body of work of one of Britain's finest poets. They are tough, dark and unrelenting in their perspective but also curiously addictive. I have now read this slim volume several times. I cannot say I fully understand them but you are ineluctably drawn into the dark mind-set of this strange, at times terrifying being that is 'Crow'. This is poetry bat its best.

Crows are indeed peculiar creatures. A grizzled folklorist once told me that when crows spy a magpie ‘up to no good’ they are often heard to cark ‘Peck-u-liar! Peck-u-liar!’ before seeing off the tricksy maggie from their territory.

without being pretentious which is rare especially poetry and a decent printing

As an English major in 1973, one of my professors recommended this book of poetry. None of our textbooks contained any of Ted Hughes' work but I jotted his name and this title in the margin of one of my books. After graduating, I spent very little time reading or thinking about poetry. But I recently revived my interest in poetry, specifically after reading several biographies of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes. I pulled out my old poetry textbooks, found this note and immediately ordered Crow to read it for myself. What an experience. The work is fantastic - the images, the rhythm, the concept. Amazing, entertaining, and relevant. I highly recommend this book.
