PlayStation Portable 3000 Core Pack System - Piano Black

I must admit for a long time I was not a fan of portable systems. I much prefer playing games on my PC or a big screen TV with the 360 or ps3. Since the mid 80's I have loved playing video games, and over time the Japanese Role Playing game, and Strategy role playing games became my favorite. The problem this generation was that for the most part they were few and far between on the 360/ps3. Sure you had exceptions like Disgaea, Valkyria Chronicles and Lost Odyssey. However, it was nothing like the SNES through the ps2 era. While I love some WRPGs like Skyrim and Dragon Age, I was craving some good old fashioned turn based goodness. For a long time I was noticing decent games in those genres appearing on the PSP. I finally broke down this year and decided to try a portable system, and the PSP had an attractive library of games I wanted. The debate then was should I buy the Vita or the PSP? While the Vita certainly looked great, the library was pretty small and the memory cards were quite pricey. A few games I was interested in were also not available on PSN as a download, and so were only available on disc. I decided to go with the PSP, and perhaps I would upgrade to a Vita in the future when the system had more games available. For those like me who enjoy a JRPG, or SRPG, you have some good games to choose from. Lunar, Jeanne D Arc, Final Fantasy Tactics, Gungnir, Tactics Ogre, Brave Story, Valkyria Chronicles 2, Disgaea 1 and 2, Wild Arms XF, and Growlanser are just some examples. Of course some of those are found on earlier systems, but they often had upgrades unique to the PSP version. Plus they are sometimes quite a bit cheaper than trying to find the game on an older system. I also love the fact that many good ps1 games are available on PSN and can be played on either the ps3 or PSP. Many of the Square Enix, Atlus, and even Working Designs classics are available and play great on the PSP. Another benefit of the PSP being so late in its lifespan is the fact that many of the games can be bought for pretty cheap right now. Make sure to compare prices between the disc and download versions. Sometimes I have found the UMD is cheaper than buying it off PSN. While I am a bit old fashioned and prefer physical copies, I realize download games have many advantages. Like I mentioned before, some games are not available though on PSN. Hopefully they will continue to add more of the PSP collection in the future. I would definitely recommend spending a few extra bucks to get a travel case for the PSP, some headphones, and a decent size memory stick.(especially if you plan on downloading most games). I am definitely happy I finally decided to get a portable system. The great library of games will keep me busy for awhile especially when I am on long trips for a week or two. Even at home I find myself playing the PSP as much, if not more than my PC or consoles. I never thought that would happen.

I'll just start by saying that I've had multiple versions of the PSP since 2007. The first games I played were Lumines 2 and Metal Gear Acid 2. Loved them both and since then I've played Breath of Fire III and the Lunar 1 remake, FFTactics and a few others. The PSP is really amazing if you love RPGs and SRPGs, and also has a fair amount of good shooter and puzzle type games to rival even the mighty DS, which I own as well. I've used the PSP many times just as an MP3 player, also on bus rides as a movie player. It's a convenient device and is a pretty much full on mini entertainment center in your pocket. The screen is beautiful and the sound can be turned up pretty loud and sounds clear and audible. You can even access the internet albeit a clunky browser but it's surely been improved upon with the newer Playstation Vita (which I haven't played yet). I always found the user interface to be pretty convenient, and never really had any gripes with the main menu. Now on to the negatives, which I have a few. The UMDs are nice to look at and at first I had no problem with them, and didn't understand why everyone on the internet did. They are clunky and feel cheap, and they don't play well in the disk drives sometimes. I think this is the biggest flaw of the PSP and the DS definitely has it beat in this department. Next, load times. Some of the load times on PSP games(UMD) are just horrendous, and comparing it to the DS the DS again here has the advantage again with their cartridge based system. The systems battery life is also dismal in comparison to the DS, but in general I think it's OK, but could of definitely be improved upon. I would usually get about 5-8 hours out of normal game playing time. On my DS Lite and even XL I get about twice that. Other than those things I can't really think of anything else to complain about right now, and these complaints are pretty miniscule for me. I still love this system and have recently acquired a ton of new games for it to keep me busy for a long while. I give it five stars but if I had to grade it on a scale of 1-10 I would give it a 9. I purchased my Silver PSP 3000 on March 7, 2019. The model I bought was listed as "Used - Very Good" condition and I believe that's a good place to start. Opening the box, I found a third party charging cable and what looked like a wad of bubble wrap, which turned out to be the system itself. An unceremonious introduction to the old classic, but what can one expect from an 11 year old, used system? While booting up the system for the first time, I noted a lack of memory card, which was to be expected but it prompted me to make more observations about the system itself. The surface scratches were to be expected and I have no complaints about them. The battery, however seemed to be a replacement for the old one and not a great one at that. It doesn't hold charge very well and it seems to be swollen, which is concerning. Any jostling of the system seems to cause the battery to lose its proper contact and it dies. the battery door doesn't close completely making it hard to prevent said jostling from having an effect. Hopefully a new battery will fix that particular problem. One extra purchase I wasn't expecting to make. Surprisingly, despite it age having been released in 2008, and being owned by who knows how many people before me, the void warranty sticker was still intact. I would soon have to break that seal after my next discovery. I studied the screen thinking that that it's screen may be cracked. Upon further inspection, it turned out to be hair and dust on the screen itself, under the plastic plate used to protect the actual screen. That would require a good cleaning that it probably hasn't had in a great many years. All in all, it plays well when the battery is doing it's job. It met most of my expectations, I took away one star for the fact that I'm looking at an additional purchase for the battery replacement and cleaning it needed. If amazon had a points system for the star rating, it would be about a 4.5 stars kind of situation, but I can't bring myself to give it 5 stars simply because I do wish that the seller could have cleaned it with compressed air if they wanted to protect the integrity of the warranty seal. Still yet, I'm very satisfied with the purchase.

The Good: Re-arranged features work great, feels lighter, buttons are more solid, everything is just better The Bad: Should have been the original model, not a huge incentive for 1000 owners to upgrade Handhelds these days have the re-make curse with Nintendo being the worst. Really three different GBA's? Four (and soon to be five) DS models? Once the latest and last iteration comes out you tend to think that model should have been the first. Same goes with the PSP since the 3000 is amazing and should have been the 1000 model. The first thing you'll notice when you take it out of the box is the weight. This thing feels light as a feather, and I almost thought it was a fake piece of plastic. This also is a benefit when playing games, and reduces the hand cramps. Another thing you'll notice is it's slimmer, and all the fat has been trimmed off. The D-pad is built better and it concaved on the inside instead of just flat like the original model. The speakers are located at the top front instead of the bottom thus the speakers are also more clear and less tinny. The addition of a built-in mic is great to for online play. The memory stick slot also has a major change with it up near the top left side instead of the bottom. The slot is also a piece of plastic that comes out instead of the black corner piece. The slot it hidden well and blends in nicely with the unit. Finally the UMD slot has changed with a pull-out slot instead of a switch that makes it pop out. You just lay the UMD in instead of sliding it in like a cassette tape. It's quieter, and seems to be slightly faster as well, and uses less battery power. Another good change is the WLAN switch is on top of the unit next to the USB port which keeps you from accidentally switching it on. The console feels better when holding due to its glossy back, and there are no contours for your hands, but this makes holding the unit better for some odd reason. Other than that everything is the same. The screen is crisper, brighter, and the new PlayStation home button looks great too. The Wi-Fi is slightly faster, supports newer security, and this unit is just solid and brilliantly designed. I really went back to my old UMD collection just to play the unit more, because games look nicer, and they just feel great being played on a solid piece of hardware.

The PSP is an incredible handheld gaming device even though it's basically a 5-year old technology. Coming from the world of iPod Touch/iPhone gaming where games are often short and casual in nature with mediocre production value, I find the gaming experience on the PSP to be at a completely different level. The games are longer and immersive and graphics are downright stunning. The best part is a lot of quality games like MGS Peacewalker, GTA Vice City Stories, FIFA 10 and Gran Turismo to name some, can be had new for under $20! Not to mention the core pack itself is selling for only $130. What a bargain, especially for a cheap...err, value-conscious shopper like me. Btw, I ordered 5 games, brand new, with the core pack for about $70. Buying i.e. downloading those same games from SONY's PSN store would have cost almost $140! IMHO, this is another good reason to choose the PSP Slim over the PSP Go. Even though I can't speak highly enough of the PSP's gaming capability, I can't say the same about some of its other features. The web browser in particular is basically useless. It's slow, outdated and navigating the pages is a nightmare. I tried it once and I'm not gonna do it again. It's a shame that it still uses the 802.11b standard for internet (Wi-Fi) connectivity. The video feature is nice, but given the relatively high cost of movies (both UMDs and digital downloads) and memory cards I don't see myself using it that much. In conclusion, if you're looking for an affordable handheld gaming device that's well made (SONY quality), has good battery life (user replaceable to boot!), and a good list of games to choose from, the PSP Slim is a great choice. Oh, be sure to order a memory pro duo card as well (watch out for fakes! Buy from an authorized SONY dealer like Amazon) as the core pack doesn't come with one. Btw, a more advanced version of the PSP, tentatively codenamed the NGP will be hitting the market later this year, but if rumors are to be believed it will be very expensive with price guestimate of $300-$400. That's too steep a price for me, and I bet, a lot of non-hardcore gamers.

I can't lie to you, I am an adult and I bought this baby for myself! It is my third PSP, and I still enjoy each and every one of them. I have a PSP-1000, and now two PSP-3000s. I chose to purchase a spare PSP after careful evaluation of both the 3DS and the PS Vita. Frankly, the 3DS made me sick when I looked at it in 3d mode, which may not affect you, and the games appeared to me to be crafted for a slightly younger audience. Don't get me wrong though, I love Nintendo, I think they are doing it right, and the characters they have brought to us over the years are vibrant, fun, and totally wholesome. Good for them! But the 3DS is not for me. Compared to the PSP, the Vita is, without question, a technically superior device. I love how Sony looked at the admittedly poor control architecture of the PlayStation Portable and just knocked it out of the park on the second generation. But frankly, the Vita only has a handful of games that I am interested in playing, and unfortunately (though understandably) the device cannot play the substantial number of UMD games and movies that I already own. For me, the value of a game system is a combination of the software and the hardware. Right now, at the end of its retail life cycle, the PSP's software is available everywhere and is extremely cheap! Most of the titles that I own can now be purchased for less than $10.00 with many available for less than $5.00. I will leave the math to you, but suffice to say, for the price of a Vita, you can purchase a PSP at $99.00 and build a substantial library besides! It really is a fantastic value, in my opinion, and I can't praise this little handheld enough. Movies, music, and games, this little beauty truly is a portable entertainment system. Thanks!

my son loves it. it was after someone called console refurbs I ordered one that was bought as brand new on Amazon, was not here for so long, was waiting on chargers I was told, when it came it was very old second hand scratched and stinking of cigarette smoke. I was disgusted he tried to say it was with me brand new. the box had 2003 on. so I was very upset my sons xmas gift was in this shocking state. he tried to charge me about 70 pound for new casing and fitting telling me we done this to it. after a major battle trying to get money back with trouble, I got my son anoiuther one this one here and paid out another amount of money, but hes very happy and relieved its brand new and even though hes 18, his gaming is important to him. fantastic product
