Developed by experts in the fields of early childhood and activism against injustice, this topic-driven board book offers clear, concrete language and beautiful imagery that young children can grasp and adults can leverage for further discussion. While young children are avid observers and questioners of their world, adults often shut down or postpone conversations on complicated topics because it's hard to know where to begin. Research shows that talking about issues like race and gender from the age of two not only helps children understand what they see, but also increases self-awareness, self-esteem, and allows them to recognize and confront things that are unfair, like discrimination and prejudice. This first book in the series begins the conversation on race, with a supportive approach that considers both the child and the adult. Stunning art accompanies the simple and interactive text, and the backmatter offers additional resources and ideas for extending this discussion. Review: Really important book - We bought this for our daughter to try and start the conversation about race with her and it’s a really good starting point. The images and words are clear and it explains things in a very matter of fact way. I’ve recommended this book to others too. It’s a difficult conversation and concept to explain to a kid and this book really helped Review: Good conversation starter - Really useful book to discuss with our boys (now 3 & 6) - they enjoy it too, so it’s not too heavy for them.

Great approach to a tricky topic
This book is a great starter for addressing the topic of racism with little children. It’s not too earnest and helps tackle a difficult subject directly and with empathy

Great book
I got this for my daughter who has been noticing people's skin colour and asking about it. She really loves this book and I love her response to it. It does have American spellings but I'll let it off because the message is clear and put across in a way that she understands.

Torn on this one, not convinced I like it
We bought this book for my 3 year old who had started to notice and ask about skin colour. Of course I can do my best to educate her but I thought a book might help her understand things clearly and possibly articulate it in terms she'd find easier to relate to but I can't help feeling like that wasn't the case with this book. It starts out very light hearted, how we are all the same, how no one is better because of the colour of their skin and lighthearted examples of what racism can look like, thumbs up from me. However - it then started to turn into a rather controversial history lesson. It isn't that it wasn't factual as such, I just think it was too in depth for a 3 year old to fathom which was surprising considering the recommended age was between 2 and 5. Think they should've just stopped while they were ahead and perhaps released a second book for slightly older children who may have a more extensive understanding.

Can’t believe where this book goes!
I’m actually sooo disappointed in this book. It starts off well, and then suddenly it is really racist half way through. Racism is about everyone, this is more about white superiority not racism!! Really wanted a book to help my little one understand skin colour, be comfortable in her own and learn that everyone is different and to be excepting of everyone etc, get those thoughts in her head from a young age. Not just white people = bad. THIS IS NOT A GOOD BOOK. Also, writers this is just factually incorrect, first the definition of racism and second that white people made it up. Racism is in every community (unfortunately). You messed up a lovely idea - real bad. Super disappointed.

Hiding behind a veil of diversity is a troubling book
Racist book attempting to hide under the veil of diversity. Claims white people created racism and only white people can be racist. Shocked, returned for a refund and would actively advise against any parent buying this. Always read your kids books before reading them to them. I’m glad I did!
