Can this be used as a push toy, as well? Looking for something for my son to help him start to walk.

My grandson uses it has a push toy. He stand at the back and pushed it. He seldom sits on it. He loves putting things in the trap door. He does walk good so not sure if it is good for a learning tool to walk.

Is there a way to take the wheels off? I accidentally snapped both front wheels into the axel without it connected to the ship

The same thing happened to me. What was the outcome? Can I buy a replacement axel and wheels?

We are following instructions but cannot get the wheels to stay connected to metallic bar, have you had this issue? Did you have to hammer hard?

We had the same issue. Just place the lower wheel in the toy and in the metallic bar, place the upper wheel and hit it hard with your hand. We did like that. Pushing is not enough. You’ll hear a click.
