Name That Style: All about Isms in Art (Bob Raczka's Art Adventures)

Wonderfully illustrated book that kids love because it is NOT overwhelming. It is not overpacked with illustrations, not overloaded with facts. It is what it should be, a gentle and solid basic introduction to some basic art pieces, that illustrate in the profound way the major art periods comes to painting. It allows a child to grasp the concept and take it from there. The book covers the following: Naturalism Mannerism Neoclassicism Romanticism Realism Impressionism Pointillism Fauvism Cubism Futurism Surrealism Abstract Expressionism Op Art Photo Realism A must for any parent who wants to give a little artist solid basic painting art history, a child, an art teacher who wants to help the students to grasp the concept of changes in art through the ages. GREAT BOOK! MIND STREACHER!

I like the book, but it is much more concise, with less information than I expected. He does go through the "isms" - Naturalism, Mannerism, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Pointillism, Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Op Art and Photorealism - but the book has only 32 pages, with basically one double-sided page per movement. The information is good, but quite limited. Good for young learners only.

This book does a good job explaining some of the major movements in painting. The text is simple but informative. I bought this book to use with middle school students, but even my mother (who is in her 60's) enjoyed it. Raczka takes readers on a chronological tour through history exploring: Naturalism, Mannerism, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Pointillism, Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Op Art, and Photo Realism. As with "Here's Looking at Me" Raczka's painting exemplars are well chosen and his explanations are easy to follow. A great introduction to the major artistic movements from the Renaissance to the recent past.

Awesome entry level review of the various styles of art from the Rennaisance onward. Gives a brief two page summary with some examples, while listing prominent artists. Excellent as a basic learning reference.

A thin book that looks appealing and gets to the point. It is what I needed to for my 10-14 year old children (to supplement art classes). I saw nothing like this at my library....though there were tons of art subject books. Pleased!

As an Advanced Placement Art History teacher, I was looking for a book that would delve into the vast cornucopia of 20th century art movements. THIS IS NOT THAT BOOK. It's short and basic. If you are looking for a 20 page or so quick overview and know very little about art, it might suffice for you. If you have more than a passing familiarity with art, this book will be a waste of your money.

This is a great book for teaching children about the many styles of art. There are not too many words which makes it great to use in the classroom as an introduction to a lesson.I will definitely be using it in my classroom next year.

I didn't read the description closely, so was disappointed that this is a very thin, soft cover book - only 32 pages, slimmer than a magazine. Binding is very weak, can't open the pages without it breaking. Only one page of content per style, and probably the kind of thing you could find in a good internet article. Wish I'd paid a few more dollars for a more comprehensive resource - this is definitely not "All About..." the 14 art styles mentioned.

This sums up art history nicely for school age kids.
