Looking at this for a potential music desk. Thoughts about how it wouod handle a 40lb keyboard tray on the front?

i've loved that this desk has been so heavy duty. As far as a 40lb tray, i'd say yes. Depending on what you use for a desktop. I used a 5'x3' butcher block and it was 1.5" thick. And it would easily handle a 40lb tray. As i also hung a dog kennel for a small 30lb dog on the left side of my desk and my 80lb server tower on the right under side of the desk.

What is a good way to mount the controller to the frame?

You would mount the controller to the underneath surface of the top, not to the frame. The frame sits back from the top and you would want the controller out at the front edge of the top for easy access.

Anybody getting creaking sounds as the desk lifts up? Not sure if its from the motors or frame leg area

Yes, after 5 months of use, using the motors like 6 to 8 times a day, mine got creaking sounds when the desk lifts. I will try some WD40 to see if it gets better.
