A simple tool. A quality product you'll love
I was very skeptical about how well this tool would work. And like many others I was disappointed that the ax arrived in a beat up and torn box. And the ax had fallen out of the plastic piece meant to protect the blade. BUT the vertical ax works and works beyond expectations. Even with the bad packaging the ax is still very sharp and makes quick work carving up roots. Of course, quick is defined by how strong you are and how much stamina you have. It is heavy and I got the 60 inch one. I'm 75 and have massive tree roots. I wholeheartedly recommend this product. I know it's expensive, but after trying it out it is well worth the money.

Seriously heavy and long multi-tool means business- weart safety goggles when using!
This tool is seriously long and heavy, but if you can wield it, you can cut up and pull up lots of items that otherwise defy prying up and removing-- like bamboo roots and shoots that should never have been planted in a Northeastern U.S. yard. Will also dig holes in compacted soils and, in some instances, move slates or rocks. As with any tool, wear safety goggles when using; and if it does not do the job, switch to a different approach (like renting excavation equipment). But very useful in the garden , or in demolishing things that must go (like nailed boards that need to be pried apart but are too large or long for a pry bar to to the job). What it roots out or pries regrets having challenged you! Sometimes it goes flying. So, again- wear safety goggles if and when you use this beast!

Does the job, but you have to provide some effort
The tool is exactly as expected, although it feels a bit heavier than I'd hoped. Guess I'm getting old. That said, it works well and the weight is part of the reason that it cuts so well. It's a great workout! Had an old oak tree that kept sprouting more branches even after the tree was removed and the roots ground down. Turns out the roots below ground were huge; one was about 10" in diameter. The smaller roots went quickly with this bar, but the large ones took me a few hours of work, over a couple of days. Still better than using an axe, in my estimation. And there was so much dirt/clay, that a saw was not a good option for me.

Great root cutting tool.
This root cutting axe is very heavy duty. The weight is great to help chop the tree roots. The coating of the tool is non-slipping. I have cut roots up to 4 inches in diameter. I highly recommend it.. The only con is the rubber cover that covers the blade. During shipping the axe cut through the rubber cover. It would have been nice to have the cover while not in use.

Buy this if you need to get through roots!
This tool is phenomenal. I had to dig a trench for better drainage and about half of the length was littered with roots, some of them were 4-5" thick. After trying to saw them out, and cut them out with an axe, I found this tool and decided to give it a try. It's a little pricy, but I was desperate. It absolutely slaughtered the roots and allowed me to finish the multi-week project in a day. The only con is that I feel like I was in a fight as this thing is HEAVY. It needs to be to allow the tool to do the work for you, but prepare for the soreness. I'm very happy to have this tool in my arsenal. Great purchase if you are dealing with roots. I can envision loaning this out to neighbors and buddies for the next 50 years. Would buy again, but this thing will outlive me and my grandkids.

It's working but slowly.
We are trying to dismantle a palm plant with a thousand separate stems bunched up, it defeated the chainsaw and the plastic tarp. I am sure this is the right tool for the job but it's slow going. Swing and stab, swing and stab. 3 of us have done it so far, over the course of a week, the tool does penetrate the roots but it's not like a few cuts and pull it out, no. I think it will be helpful for setting raised beds in the garden too, for taking out the turf and defining the hole to set them in. That was hard to do with a shovel, this seems like it will make a cleaner edge. It's a good tool but it's not magic. The weight of the axe does help it push into the roots.

Disappointing performance
Good quality metal but disappointing cutting performance. I expected it to cut through roots like butter but it didn’t. Not worth $100+ maybe 60-75. I didn’t need a dig bar. I needed a cutter for large tree roots. I already have a good dig bar.
