Can we use it without the full set ? What materiel is the "cheese" made of ? Is the "cheese" magnetic ? Or the mouse just detects collision ?

You can use just the mouse if you want. It runs across the floor, table or any other hard surface. You can create your own maze with craft sticks if you want. Just remember that for each movement of the mouse, it moves a certain distance. The cheese is plastic. It is not magnetic. The mouse must just detect the collision for it to light up when it reaches it.

The mouse is run by batteries. They are easy to change.
