Education is important when using combustables
For YEARS..decades... these things were about 6 bucks at places like Walmart and hardware stores. That being said and over and done with; about 14-16 bucks is what you'll pay now for this large size. It is not quite as generally sturdy as one you might have had back in the 70s or longer ago...but it is fully functional. Some people in reviews said they couldn't get the paper instructions out. Full stop!!! If you don't know how to get the paper out, you do NOT need to use one without A. someone who DOES know how to use it showing you B.watching a how to video. You are dealing with a potentially dangerous item so knowing how to operate it is extremely important. *There is a small ring type hook on top of the lantern. You pull UP on that with one hand while having your other hand gently on the globe cage so you can push it forward or back to get the paper out. You also need to know how to do that to be able to clean the globe AFTER the lantern is perfectly cool to the touch. Any black soot should be cleaned regularly. Do NOT do it while lantern is hot or even warm. Do NOT lean the lantern over. If none of that makes sense watch a video before doing it. Just because it exists doesn't mean everyone should buy or use one. I highly recommend watching several videos on lanterns before you buy one if you have never owned one. This lantern is perfectly fine quality. The globe could be thicker but that's all that is "wrong" with it quality wise. And if you handle it carefully and respectfully it will probably still be working after you are gone. Not a toy. Not a necessity. It is a helpful tool to use as much as you want or need to use it always making SURE to understand how to use it, maintain it, store it. You don't have to be terrified of these lanterns but you certainly DO need to know the basics. Be safe and enjoy this fine product at a decent price.

Good value for the money
I'm really happy with the quality vs. value of these lanterns. They have a couple of minor issues but all in all I ended up with some really nice functional lanterns for less than ten bucks each and that's pretty hard to beat. I ordered four total lanterns and was happy that they all arrived intact with no dents or shipping related injuries. They were well packaged, each in an individual box with bubble wrap and air pillows and then those individual boxes in a larger box with air pillows. The overall build quality is fairly poor, as you'd expect for a product of this price point. The metal is thin, the quality of the paint and application of it are pretty poor. They painted the whole wick burner mechanism which I found kind of odd... most lanterns I've seen leave that unpainted but it didn't seem to hurt anything when I used them. But all in all the ones I got would be perfectly functional right out of the box even though I chose to make minor modifications. I took each one apart, removing the globe and wick mechanism, and filled them about half full to let them set a day and check for leaks of the fount (reservoir). None of the 4 lanterns I received leaked at the bottom seams, as it seems many people have issues with in their reviews. Given that it seems to be a common problem though, after the day of leak testing I drained mine cleaned them out with acetone, and lined the tanks of each of mine with paint. I happened to have some special paint (Masterseries silver primer actually) used for the purpose of lining gas tanks left over from restoring an old VW Beetle tank (a hobby of mine). Yeah, that's kind of a drag to feel motivated to "fix" a brand new product but again for as cheap as they are I didn't mind lining the tanks with some leftover tank liner that I didn't really have earmarked for anything else just to make sure I didn't ever have to worry about the seams leaking. I also decided to attach the filler cap to the lantern using some light weight decorative chain... because otherwise I'm pretty sure I'd set it down while filling it up and never see the thing again! After giving that a couple of days to fully cure I filled them up... a tip here is that mine seemed to hold about 1 cup of oil (kero) at the fill line so I measured 6 ounces, about 3/4 cup, to fill them so I knew I wasn't too close to the totally full point. I let them set for a couple hours as I did other stuff to let the wick soak up, and then came back and lit them up. They worked fine. I burned them for several hours in my garage and they didn't really give off a significant smell even burning normal kerosene. With the wick adjusted properly they didn't soot the globes and they just did what they are supposed to do. I think I'll get one of those liquor or olive oil bottles with the little pouring spout to keep around for refilling them. The light output is not big. Light output seems to be most dependent on wick size. These have about a 1/2 wide wick which means around 5-7 "candlepower" at most, which is basically lumens. Normal household bulbs are usually measured in at least hundreds of lumens so we're not talking about a lot of light here as compared to normal lighting. It's enough to keep from stumbling around over stuff but I wouldn't really want to read a book by it. That's what I got them for though so it's fine for my purposes. I figure I'll use them for general "not bumping into stuff" lighting during any extended power outage and camping and then only fire up the pressurized (Coleman) lanterns or battery powered stuff if I'm actually doing something that warrants that much light. I'm trying to prepare for an extended power outage of a minimum of 2 weeks. I also have some candles, battery powered LED, and propane lanterns and lighting but redundancy is wise when preparing for emergencies (two is one and one is none is a common saying in that context). Kerosene is my fuel of choice for this because it's inexpensive, easy to get, and stores well. These things were a small investment in money and time and now that I know they work and are ready if I ever need them they can just set out in the shed out of the way and out of mind until the power goes out or I want to bring them camping or something.

Bottom fell out and covered me in fuel!!!!
DANGEROUS!!! THE WHOLE BOTTOM OF THE LAMP HAS LET GO AND OIL HAS RUN ALL OVER MY WALL AND SPLASHED ALL OVER ME!! I purchased this and filled it with oil in November. The window to return was Nov 25th. I put oil in it and put it on a shelf in my dining room for when power would go out as it often does due to weak electrical grid out my way. The other night the power went out. It was only 16°out and a sbuw storm when power went out last week. I reached for the lamp off the shelf and I got COVERED with lamp oil with NO way to get it off due to having a well and no electricity to run the pump!! When I put it on the shelf I put it on a plate so my shelf wouldn't get accidentally scratched. The plate filled with oil and the bottom of the tank just let lose and drenched me! I have left an email with the company but if course no response. DO NOT TRUST THIS PRODUCT NOR THE COMPANY THAT SELIS IT!!! I would give it a negative 20 if I could. DANGEROUS PRODUCT!!

It does the job
It arrived with a broken glass. But it gets five stars because its replacement arrived within 24 hours. It produces light equal to a Dietz lantern of equivalent size. The fit and finish is not equal to the Dietz lantern but it is much less costly. Overall, it is a good choice.

Fuel drops and bad paint
It shines pleasantly (5 stars), but fuel drips from the point of contact of the tank with the racks and bottom (-1 star). Also, the paint is not designed for the operation of the burner, you should light it to the maximum and leave it outside for the first 30 minutes or an hour until all the paint on the lid burns (-1 star). It’s about the 8-inch lamp. Now I'm waiting for 12 inches, but I don't think there won't be problems with paint and leakage there too Upd: the 12” just came. It’s dripping from the bottom. And the included wick doesn’t fit. It’s definitely smaller than wick hole so you need a wider wick to avoid some wobbling of flame. But thank you for pre-putting any wick inside

Classic lantern, great for the campsite.
Used it at the campsite. Easy to use, provides nice ambient light to intense bright light. Its a good size and looks nice. Almost antique like. Make sure it remains upright at all times or the lamp oil will spill out. Do not use indoors, as there are fumes that come out of the top.
