How do i know that they're fitting correctly? Do they need to have a suction sort of seal?

They do get into the canel tight so watch out for suction if you breath hard possibly I had put them in to far and then blew my nose so my daughter had to help get them out. They are tight but worked so well at a large major outdoor concert event.

What happens if you get water on/in the sound filter?

Water won't hurt them as far as I can tell. I like that they cut the volume but don't have a muffled sound like two or three other kinds I've tried.
