A man of two worlds, Arthur Curry is both the super hero Aquaman and King of the legendary Atlantis. The inhabitants of the fabled underwater continent have never taken easily to the idea of a half-human ruler, but now the kingdom itself is rejecting Arthur's claim to the throne. To stop the devastating seaquakes that are literally tearing his home in two, Arthur will have to delve deep into the mysterious history of Atlantis, confronting secrets from his own past he thought long-buried! In AQUAMAN VOL. 6, acclaimed storytellers Jeff Parker ( BATMAN '66 ) and Paul Pelletier ( SUPERMAN ) unleash a Maelstrom of change on the King of Atlantis! Collects AQUMAN #32-40 and stories from SECRET ORIGINS #2 and #5. Review: EPIC Series Continues! Includes Mera Origin Story! - This was definitely a very memorable collection of Aquaman! Ever since the New 52's reboot of Aquaman I have been loving this series! It came off so strong with such great story telling, and then around volume 5 it hit a slow spot for me and the stories became a bit dull and uninteresting. Now that Maelstrom is here it has picked all the slack back up and got the Aquaman series back on on the epic path it was on. There is some very memorable moments in this collection including more ancient Atlantis and other mythologies, Arthur's battle for acceptance from the Atlantans, a origin story for Mera, and much more amazing stories that I won't hint at (because of spoilers). There is also some great appearances from characters like Grod and Matrian Man Hunter. In Maelstrom, you see Arthur in probably his most emotional state ever. This really made Aquaman's character a lot more interesting. If you have been enjoying this series so far, don't stop now! Review: Five Stars - Another Good Aquaman story, the New 52 has really revived the King.

Fast Paced Book that Commits a Major Retconn to Aquaman's Backstory
Maelstrom ties together the remaining big plot threads from the previous volume of Aquaman while executing a major retconn to Arthur Curry's backstory. First and foremost, Aquaman must battle the Chimera: a new supervillain genetically created by humans using numerous forms of aquatic life, the brain-dead human host of a mortally wounded diver (who Aquaman tried to save in the previous volume), and the brain matter of the massive Atlantean beast Aquaman previously defeated. Chimera is a fun, though over the top villain who mostly ends up serving as a plot device to help Aquaman understand that his very role as king is being rejected by Atlantis itself, causing mass sea-quakes. Next the book wraps up the story of the Atlantean assassins who tried to kill Mera in a very satisfying, Arthur Curry manner. Then the book focuses on the main crux of the story: the fact that Atlantis's own energy is rejected Arthur as king. Bringing Dr. Shin and the archaeologist who previously unleashed the giant born monsters to Atlantis, Aquaman learns that his mother's assassination wasn't what he always thought it to be. The revelation about his mother and where she really ended up does seriously change the nature of Arthur's backstory so some may not enjoy it, but I felt it was handled deftly enough and gave us an enjoyable twist. The book moves at a fast pace as Parker tries to wrap all the previous story threads up and then shunts Mera and Arthur along on the new quest to track down the mysterious Maelstrom realm. The brief detour to Gorilla City is amusing though it gets resolved a bit too fast. The weakest part of the book is the artwork when Mera and Arthur get to the Maelstrom realm and battle against a race of lava rock trolls. They are visually entertaining enemies at first but there are too many big splash page shots of the lava monsters get doused with water by Mera which just gets too busy looking for the artist. It all starts to look too samey as well as Aquaman is just surrounded by ugly scenes of lava. The final villain of the book is a mountain-sized lava god and it is just too much for a story that should be a bit smaller in scale and focused on Aquaman and his mother.

Thrill ride
I've never gave Aquaman a chance. I'm happy I did. The best volume to be produced for Aquaman. Kept me on the edge of my seat, couldn't put it down until it was done. The art is consistent throughout the graphic novel. In this volume a few loose ends are tied up and sets itself up for, hopefully again, a great next volume.
