My 8 and 11-year-old granddaughters LOVE this. They love the designing and the making. Little much for a 4-year-old, but would also be good for a 12-year-old. You go, Ms. Christmas!

would this be a good kit to use with a beginner sewing machine for a 11yr old girl who's very crafty?

Yes, it is. My daughter is 8 so she needs help but an 11 years old should be fine

How much can a kid do with this if they don't know how to sew?

My niece hasn't learned to sew yet at all. It comes with a lot of pins and basically, she was pinning everything in place and then taking it apart after showing it to her mom or me or some other adult. I assume that she will eventually get to the sewing part of it, but she was having a lot of fun without sewing at all.

Is this way too young for a 5 year old who loves to design and is pretty good at it? if i help her sew would it be ok, or will it be too frustrating?

Sorry, it took me so long. This toy is what you make of it. It is very open to creativity and can be as simple or complex as you want it to be. It comes with a brochure on what the fashion design process is. It can be as simple an straight pinning fabric to the manikan, or you can sketch idea, pull fabric samples and then sew the dress together. Just a warning, there are small sharp parts.
