What's the difference between this one and the original Sushi Go version?

You get a lot more cards of different types and therefore can make many different menus (the rule book has several listed). There is also a board where you can put thick cardboard versions of the cards being used in the game. This helps everyone to know what is in the deck and how those cards score.

Is this an expansion pack that requires you to own the first set as well?

Nope. Think of it as Sushi Go Plus. It's Sushi Go with TONS of replay-ability swapping in different rolls, appetizers, desserts and specials bringing in different strategies and scoring options to the game. Plus the score tracker on the game board edge means you don't need a pad pen to keep score with. I just wish this was out when I got Sushi Go. Now the only reason to get the original set is if you need a smaller boxed game to travel with...

is this game entertaining for adults only or best when played along with and primarily for children? Is it as fun for 2 than it is for more?

It's a lovely game for patient adults with fairly young children as young as eight. There is some subtle strategy the adults can angle while the kids go after the more obvious plays, but they even begin to pick up on the advanced notions. Sweet game with hidden pedagogical value!
