I would suggest the "L" size. I am able to carry my 17" laptop and all of my medical supplies as well, including vitals log book and monarch size franklin planner. The larger adds very additional weight. These are very well made and tough backpacks, you won't go wrong with either size. I hope this helps you make the right choice for you.

Is this machine washable?

No, the trim is genuine leather which can’t be machine washed. I sprayed canvas waterproof on it which helped a lot with making it waterproof and helped in stain resistance. It darkened the canvas but I don't mind as long as it protects my bag.
