I have owned a number of small pen style contact less voltage testers. I use them mainly to make sure that I do not have a live line when I tear into an outlet, or electrical box, or go to touch a wire end that someone else says they shut off at the breaker. Basically it is to make sure that I am not grabbing a live wire before getting shocked. All of them tend to be light weight, and they tend to break fairly easily as they get bumped around in the tool bag. So I do not go for the highest priced one, or the ones that have more features than I actually need. In the case of the Kaiweets Voltage Tester, it kind of hit a unique sweet spot; it was affordable, it seemed well made, and it was easy to operate. I liked that it had a power button to turn it off and on. Many other brands have the twist end that also serves as the battery compartment access access where sometimes you accidentally open the batteries instead of turning it on or off. The Kaiweets tester also will automatically power itself off if you forget to, so you will not go to use it and find it's batteries are dead. It is pretty straight forward with both a light up indicator and an audible beep when power is detected, and it will give you an approximate voltage level when you bring it near a live circuit. And unlike many of these it will let you know when the batteries are low, so you do not find out while you are trying to use it in the middle of a job. Does it work. Yes. Will it last forever? No. It's $12. If you need a high end one, pay more for one. Will it cover the needs of a DIY home improvement weekend warrior? Yes it will.

I am not one for reading manuals so I was pleased that this tool was pretty intuitive. I did need to read how to switch between sensitivities and the writing was a little small, but then it would probably be OK for someone with better eyesight or in better light. This tool is not for measurement like a meter would be. This I bought as a double check as sometimes electrical panels are mislebeled and I need something to tell me that recepticals and sockets are not live before I do simple maintenance work. This one fit the bill and the price was right for me. If I were a contractor I would have chosen something more rugged and branded, but I am a landlord that is frequently called to check out faulty switches and simple work a householder would do so it was just fine.
