Can anyone compare this against the hape salad set? i know this has more pieces, but i’m wondering if the hape set is a better quality.

We have both - the Hape set is really nice all wood and felt - the pepper (?) shaker that comes with it has beads in it that make sounds as you shake it.  The M&D is a little bigger and has a velcro fork, all of the pieces have velcro, so the fork “picks up” the salad (the greens are fabric but still stick to the fork).  Both sets have issues with the wood pieces falling to the bottom of the bowl - M&D is a little better since the greens are more flexible and thin, so they “mix” better with the wood pieces, but they also stay folded in half along the “stem” of the green so you don’t see the decoration on them.  The salad dressing on the M&D is neat- there is a retractable string so they “pour” a line of dressing out - downfall is whatever is in the bottle to retract the string as you turn them upright makes them top heavy so they fall over very easily.  The greens packages are also pretty flimsy and after a week of play (just stacking them, not opening closing, one is pretty damaged with a few breaks already.  The M&D has olives and croutons that fit in the can and box (barely) that comes with it - a nice bonus.  If we had to go with one set I would choose the Hape.

They are a little pieces of wood that are painted. I am sure that they used lead free paint.. I don’t know if they used a coating to cover that.i do know that my grandkids love it an play with that over all the food toy I have(huge plastic storage bin.  My kids are older five and seven so they aren’t in the stage of putting things in their mouth.
