My Favorite EDC Knife, Ever. I Only Wish The Blade Were 1" Longer...
I bought my copies before the price jump (BidenFlation), so mine were an excellent value. Even at over $120 today, I'd buy again. Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) Knives are great quality, even the less expensive ones without that expensive CPM steel. This one is perfectly suited to carrying all day, it's incredibly useful, very easy to use, easy to sharpen, has a sexy blade shape, is well-designed, and feels great in the hand. I have large hands, so it fits perfectly in mine. If you have small hands, you might want a smaller knife. I mean, it's not that large, it's the perfect EDC (EveryDay Carry) size, but a 5" handle might feel big if you have small hands. I only wish the blade boasted 4.5" of usable blade length, instead of the 3.5" it actually has. Other than that? Perfect!

Tactical Samurai Blade!
WOW! What a suprise when I received this blade! Out of the box, I was first impressed with the handle texture. Great finish and texture without being too "gripy" Small bead texture gives excellent grip but won't get caught up on clothing or belts. Excellent belt clip as well. Just the right amount of tension so its secure in a pocket but not tight enough that it is hard to deploy. Although I must echo other reviewers in that out of the box, the blade is tight and a little hard to open. If your like me, however, after purchasing a new knife, once you play with it a bit to get used to the feel and operation, the blade did lossen a bit and became eaiser to deploy (or perhaps I got used to it!) Excellet ergonomics. Feels great in the hand. Easy to change blade position due to its balance. The Blade....... is awesome! Razor sharp outta the box and in a traditional tanto shape. Its obvious Mr. Williams brought his wealth of knowledge to its design. It would be hard to imagine a modern day samurai NOT carrying this as an EDC! Love the double safety as well which virtualy gives this piece the strength of a fixed blade. The finish on the blade is impressive and I am sure will please those who love the "black tactical" look. I would be hard pressed to find another blade that is stonger, sharper or simply more astheticaly pleasing to the eye. All in all, 5 stars for a VERY reaonable priced knife. Excellent value for this price point. Lets face it folks, the primary use for this knife is personal protection, but I am sure it will have great utility as well. The only improvement I could envision is adding a spring assist (only because I am partial to those anyway). I just found my new EDC!

Truly amazing knife in the right hands.
A lot of reviews had said they had troubles with the assisted opening mechanism, which troubled my decision with my purchase at first... but I figured what the problem everyone was having and ordered it; none of which is a problem with the knife. CRKT is quality built knives and I had my M16 for years until I finally lost it in Tahoe and ordered this one. I was excited today when it finally came and just to my sarcastic surprise, it works amazingly. Very solid, sturdy, and FAST opening. I immediately love this knife. Quality AUS 8 steel, razor sharp edge, pin-sharp point, and a beautiful gentlemen knife in all I think. The blade and knife are designed for one thing and one thing only: combat. The only work this knife should be doing is protecting yourself, and it has the capabilities and qualities to do just that very effectively in the right hands. **As for the assisted opening**: there are no problems with this mechanism, the reason people have problem is because they are trying to open it incorrectly or like a traditional knife. It works differently for a reason, that reason being so it doesn't swing open in your pocket and slash you open. You aren't supposed to try to push the blade up from the handle, you're supposed to push it forward towards the direction it comes out. Almost as if this knife was an OTF (out the front) you push the knob on the blade forward. If this still confuses you, look at the way the handle curves in towards the little knob. It goes a littles forward, use your thumb to follow that exact path and you can wedge the blade out nicely. But the proper way is to take you thumb and push the knob in the direction the blade will point; forward. Hope that helps people (also the book that comes with the knife has an illustration); and once again would just like to say this knife is amazing. Love CRKT, never had a problem with their knives apart from losing them, lifetime customer right here.

Awesome Design, But Doesn't Sharpen Well For Me
This Hassatsu folding knife by CRKT (or Columbia River Knife and Tool), is almost perfect in every way in my opinion. I think that the shape of the blade is truly beautiful and outstanding at piercing/stabbing tasks. Seriously, the point on this thing is mean, I love it. And the way it grips in my hand is one of the best feeling ones I've ever felt on a knife. It feels to me like it's part of my hand and so incredibly sturdy. And just the handle itself is so robust and hardy I thought, I've just never gripped a knife this well before. I also really like the very inventive double locking mechanism that the knife uses. And while I sort of can see how it might intimidate and annoy some folks, especially when first using the Hissatsu. Well, I have opened and closed enough times now that I can easily do so one-handed. Hopefully it will become that way for you as well. Plus, I think that because of this super heavy-duty locking mechanism, that unless you receive some factory defect knife, that this blade will never close on you at all without you initiating it. It's almost like it becomes a fixed blade essentially with this lock I thought. It gives me a real great feeling of security and safety when using it. Also, as far knives looking bad***, pardon my language please. Well, in my book the Hissatsu folding knife easily ranks in the top 70s-80s out of 100. I have quite a few Spydercos, Ka-Bars and Cold Steel knives that beat it out in terms of looking more radical, meaner, bizarre, etc, though. Still, in my book this blade looks pretty awesome and quite unlike a good majority of folding knives on sale today. And, I really dig the whole Japanese vibe and theme to a lot of the CRKT knives like this one. Now on to where I'm extremely unhappy with this model. And let me preface the following by stating that my annoyance and dislike of this may very well be user error, well, possibly. Hence why I still gave this product 4-stars instead of the 3 I was originally going to give it. But, when it comes to trying to sharpen the Hissatsu in my use, oh man does this blade ever anger me and let me down. I found that it had a sort of good factory edge on it to begin with. But that died off pretty quick for me in just opening the occasional box, cutting rope, really not much use actually. Yet, when I've tried to sharpen the knife on my Smith's Diamond Sharpening stone, the big bar version, not the pocket sized one. Well, I can't for the life of me put a really sharp edge back on this knife or one anywhere near the factory edge. It's maddening! And I don't claim to be a sharpening master like so many of my fellow Amazon reviewers. It's something I've always struggled with, especially trying to find the right angle for different blades I own. But, as I said, I just use my Smith's Diamond Sharpening stone and I've sharpened everything from a CRKT "Mah-Chete" Fixed Blade (1075 Carbon Steel), Kershaw "Blur Tiger Stripe Tanto" folding (Sandvik 14C28N), Zero Tolerance "0350TSST Partially Serrated Tiger Stripe" (Crucible S30V), various Spydercos with VG-10 steel or 8Cr13MoV steel, that Carpenter Steel I don't like in my Cold Steel knives and basically I've just had lots of success with a ton of different blades and blade steels on my sharpener. Yet, this Hissatsu just will not take anything from my the sharpener but the most basic and the most bland utility edge, if I'm lucky. And forgive me, I don't remember what kind of steel is in this knife. But it doesn't matter, it won't sharpen for me. It very well could be my technique, but I doubt it because I've tried so many different angles and techniques with this knife and nothing works. I'm sure somebody who swears their life on some tree bark or whetstone they use to sharpen with will tell me it's my diamond sharpener I'm using that's the problem. But, as I've said, all my other hundreds of blades and different steels usually sharpen razor good on this diamond stone. But this Hissatsu just won't budge when I try to sharpen it. Regardless of whether I'm the problem in this sharpening equation or not, I still am unhappy with this knife. The main reason I'm unhappy is because the knife is so awesome in every other way besides not taking an edge. That it's just such a letdown for it to be so wonderful almost everywhere and that one major part of to just be terrible in my experience and use. Who knows, though, your mileage may vary and you might be some sharpening wizard taught from the ghost's of ancient Samurai and laugh at my situation. Or, you just may have a better method that I'll never learn, I've tried pretty much all of them really though. But, I just wanted to warn folks like myself, that you may buy this totally rad looking knife and find you cannot keep a nice edge on it. To be honest it could just be terrible steel in this knife or it's not ground or built well, who knows. But, I hope it's not an issue for you and I hope my review had been helpful, thanks.

Super durable and very sharp.
This knife is awesome, I have been using it for a month and I love it. The spring in it is super fast and it will take some time to get used to. It has a high tension which makes it hard to open at first but after a week it will be broken in and will deploy very quickly. The edge out of the box is top notch, I have had little dulling in the month that I have owned it and I use it almost daily. The handle is very ergonomic and will fit a forward and a reverse grip without and problem. The handle is coated in a textured gripping material which makes it easier to hold with gloves on and when it is wet. The linear lock has a small pin that comes out and blocks the knife from being closed when it is deployed which makes for a very strong lock. The pocket clip can be reversed if you carry in your left pocket. Pros. 1. Strong blade. 2. Great texture. 3. Fits hands nicely. 4.Very sharp out of box. Cons. 1. It will take some practice to open because the spring is very stiff. 2. The pocket clip is about 1/4 in from the top of the knife so it does not go all the way down into the pocket. 3. It might be too big for local laws as it is 8.75 inches when open.

Excellent knife but ... (edited)
but a knife you can't open is useless. Everything about the knife is excellent except for getting it open. I'll edit this comment assuming I can figure it out or it fixes itself through "breaking in" (I have until Jan 31 to return it ... ) but currently it's all but impossible to open one handed, making the tension bar completely pointless. I've tried pushing it open at every possible angle, using some light oil where the bar meets the blade, etc. If I pushed any harder I'd end up tearing the skin off my thumb, and even then it wouldn't be open. So the knife is great, except that a knife you can't open is just a heavy useless piece of metal. I've spent the last 10 waking hours searching everywhere on the net for a "solution" to this but every response is the same. It's either people saying they could never get it open and returned it or people who say it opened very easily and they love it. I have a feeling there's some sort of quality control troubles going on here and I am going to be one of those people who end up returning it and never looking back. Again, I'll be giving it some time and working with it constantly, but if this knife can't "break in" within the next month it's going back. Edit: Bumped this to 5 stars. Why? Figured out the trick (read: position and angle) to opening this, and it opens with extreme ease. Thing needs a tutorial video almost, but after being determined to figure it out and playing around with it for almost another day now I've got it. Didn't have to adjust tension or anything. If I try to open it any other way, I can't open it prior to cutting down to the bone of my thumb. If I do it correctly it's like pushing a feather. It's hard to explain, but don't smuther the thumb tab, instead your thumb should be below it and push up it (not straight up, just slightly to the side) and it opens the blade easily and instantly.

Can be fixed, cannot be trusted
Bought this knife on a whim as collector item. Initial impression was not very positive since it was very hard to open mine with right hand and impossible with left. Removed the spring rod, which was quite easy if you have proper torx screwdriver (T6 or T7 probably). To do it just click the knife open and look inside. There is one small screw, which hold the rod in place. Loose it a bit and you will be able to slide the rod out. It worked nice as simple lockback and I decided to try assisted opening again and restored the rod in place. Knife worked like a charm this time, springing open with minimal effort. Even left-hand opening was possible and quite easy. It looks like there is some "sweet spot" rod position where leverage is just right. This spot may be hard to find but in my case rod was inserted 2 millimeters (1/16 inch) deeper when compared to its original position. So yes, there will be a lot of people with no issue. But the fact that the difference between properly working knife and almost totally unusable one is 1/16 inch or even less means only one thing: this knife can not be trusted in tight spot. It is nice to have knife, so you can buy it and play with it - just do not rely on it.

Awesome knife!
Bought this as a present for my father for Christmas, and I loved the knife for the size, weight, blade shape and length, and the LAWKS system, but the throw was a bit stiff. My father loved the knife, and after a couple days after Christmas my girlfriend's Amazon present for me came in the mail and low and behold it was the Hissatsu for me to match the one I had gotten my father. This blade is beautiful, but I did have the same stiff throw issue with mine, and how I've fixed that s with some gun oil and consistently using it. It has now loosened to the point where it is nice and smooth, and not tough anymore. This is a beautiful blade and I love the Japanese influence on it. It is unique in it's shape and style, and the G10 handle feels very natural in the hand and isn't overly wide (I don't have large hands, so I was looking for a knife with a skinnier handle, but still a beefy blade.) Everyone I show the knife to loves it and loves the uniqueness of the blade style. This knife is exactly what I wanted in a knife, and I'm ecstatic to have received one as a present from my darling girlfriend. I will be purchasing the other Japanese influenced CRKT knives because of this one. I would definitely tell people to purchase this, but would let them know to oil the pivot mechanism for a better throw.

Sau Scharf
Klasse Messer!
