Would this be good to wipe on firearms for long term storage?

I don't think I'd use it for that purpose ?  I'd do a little more investigating into the firearms coating compatibility for your long term purpose. I've only been using it to coat under my vehicles.

does this go on clear?

Mitch,   lps 3 does not go on clear.  This is more of a lighter version of cosmsline,  a heavy petroleum parfin waxes.   The color is more a light tan and remains soft and tacky for quite some time.  Its perfect for anything you want to prevent rust or oxidation in humid environments.  Lps 3 is easily removed with brake cleaner.  For a more long term rust prevention you should look at lps Procyon which is hard coat dryfilm.

Can this be used for grills? Concerned about cooking after using it. Thanks in advance.

I’ve always used it to protect my firearms while they are in storage. I heard that it could be used for anything and it was specifically designed with the restaurant industry in mind. However I do not know if that is true. If you use it on your grill be sure to cook it off before you start cooking your meat.

In years past (many years ago), i used to buy something called lps-4 that i used on metal surfaces on my boat (salt water exposed).  is this the same?

This company makes LPS-1, LPS-2 and LPS-3.  I was introduced to LPS-2 and LPS-3 by a technician who served Craftsman snow throwers over 30 years ago . He recommended it for the chutes and parts that came in contact with snow to lubricate and prevent rust.  I have used it for years on various products, especially good for bearings on garage doors.  He did not have anything like LPS-4 and I have never seen it anywhere.  LPS sprays leave a thin self healing film to protect and lubricate metal.  It may work in a marine environment but I don't know.  It would likely cling to metal surfaces but for how long in a salt water environment, that's that question.
