Are the head and the handle securely attached to each other? Or do I have to assemble?

Oh definitely, when the handle broke at the axe headon mine, the broken off portion never came out of the head itself. Now I just have a broken handle and a pitiful excuse for an axe head.

Does this come with a blade cover?

Yes, small leather cover with a snap

Can this be used for Competition?

I tried to use it for throwing, it's weighted poorly for throwing and the axe handle is not built of durable enough wood to withstand it. I would not recommend it for competition.
