ACDelco Gold 337-1078 (88877177) Starter

Worked perfectly and solved the problem.

Fairly simple replacement if you have enough clearance under the vehicle *and* the appropriate sockets. Two 15mm bolts (some say 14mm?) holding it in place, one 13mm nut (1/2 inch was slightly too small for mine) and one 5/16 nut that both hold a wire harness connector. There's a third nut but it doesn't need to be removed because it's just a wire that attaches to the starter itself. Sockets that bend and extensions are helpful, as it's a little tight. I actually changed mine on my 4.0L 1998 Jeep Cherokee without jacking up the vehicle, but it was barely enough room to reasonably do it. Worked fine, although I have no idea if AC Delco will continue to work for the many years that the original one did. Hope this helps at least a couple people. Good luck!

This starter stopped working after 19 months. Not completely unbelievable, but what is unbelievable is the warranty. This starter has a 2 year warranty through AC Delco. Pretty great, right? Hold yer horses there partner. Amazon only gives you a 30 day return window. Yep. If you want to take advantage of your 2 year warranty, you have to do it within 30 days. Amazon offers “product support”, which is to direct you to call AC Delco. But wait….there’s more! AC Delco will tell you that you have to return it through the seller! And around and around we go! The manufacturer warranty is worthless after 30 days. If you want a starter that is only guaranteed to work for 30 days, then buy this one.

After looking around locally for a replacement starter for my 1990 Jeep Wrangler with the 4.2 engine, I realized it would have to be shipped in anyway, they wanted a core deposit, and the cost was still high. I purchased this starter for twenty bucks less than I could get it locally. The quality is excellent and it installed without issue. Starting is quiet and turnover is quick. I have no reservations about recommending this unit.

This thing is made in China, the 4 stars is because the mounting threaded hole was not tapped all the way, lacking about one quarter of a inch, to correct for that I just used 2 additional washers, but more than enough threads to hold the starter, but you must make sure both bolts are tight against the starter or the torque when starting will crack or break the aluminum head (ouch). I bought the used but like new. The starter worked the first time and 2 more times, no grinding noise, nice and quit and smooth. I like the part of no CORE, I will have my old starter rebuilt and store for future use. I am a professional mechanic 20+ years so yes I'm a bit picking and have a problem with items made in China.
