Use your serger to its full potential! The serger is the most versatile tool a sewist can use, capable of hemming, seaming, decorative finishes and more. Too often, sergers are used for finishing edges and nothing more, simply because "it's too complicated to change the settings." Author Gail Yellen is here to demystify the serger and help you get the most out of your machine! By familiarizing yourself with the various components and how they affect the stitch, you'll tackle new stitches and techniques with a new enthusiasm. Features: • Handy Operator Tips explain common handling errors and how to avoid them • Accessory Foot Appendix details the different serger feet available and when to use them 5 simple projects put your new serging knowledge into practice • Coverstitch overview complete with decorative and construction techniques • Quick Reference Guide lets you quickly find the machine settings for popular stitches Advice on threading, tension, differential feed, and needles relevant to all models; tips for using decorative threads that result in masterful finishes, cover stitch and more--it's all here in Serger Essentials ! Review: Book has great illustrations, tips and projects - I am completely new to serging and this book has certainly been useful! I like much of the detail in this book. The Photo examples are great! The wording is simply stated and useful. There is a troubleshooting section that will help if your tensions are off. Not only does it cover the basics of serging, but it also includes plenty of tips. There are hints for getting accurate seam allowances, working with thick fabrics, decorative threads etc. I also like it that she discussed the different useful presser feet available for a serger. I didn't know about these! There are many projects (at least half of the book in fact). These projects are to give you a hands on with the different techniques the book covers. For example, napkins with rolled hems, wire edged ribbons, creating lettuce edges on knit fabrics and more! There is also a section that talks about coverstitching. I don't have this feature on my serger, so cant say much about it. I'm not sure if there is really any cons to this book. Perhaps if your looking for an in depth manual with lots of reading this wouldn't be for you. After only 38 pages of teaching she gets into the hands on learning projects. Several of them I didn't find especially cute, but certainly the techniques could be adjusted to anyone's style and liking...and who knows you might think they're all cute! Review: Seems like a great book… - When I looked inside, this book seems to have a lot of helpful info…but i returned the serger i had ordered, so i no longer needed the book. It does seem like it would have been helpful, and would have helped someone else looking for this. I hope this helps.

Great book for serving
My hobby is sewing… since I was 10 I have been using a serger for over 20 years. I am in need of a new one… so looking at more advanced models. This book was recommended. wish I was told about this book yrs ago…it clarified things I never knew about and the things I want to be able to do… like knits etc. It does a great job of describing and illustrating troubleshooting issues. Definitely a resource for anyone with a serger or thinking about getting one.

Great for a beginner
My wife loved it, she was given a serger by a friend and had no clue what it does. This helped her understand it more and taught her some skills to get started. Overall a good beginners book.

lots of photos and concise info
This books is well written and informative. I read it cover to cover after purchasing a new cover stitch machine and found it very helpful. I also took Ms. Yellen's Craftsy class on Cover stitching where this book was recommended. Perfect companion to the online class. thanks!

Pretty Basic
No new information for me. However, I think a more machine specific book would be more useful.
