New SAT Grammar Workbook

She has been scoring well on actual College board SAT Practice tests and Khan Academy. When she started doing practice tests from this, she got confused on most of the questions. Trying to make sense of the answers was very frustrating as well since no explanation is given. We went back to Khan Academy for more practice questions. The topics covered are too shallow to provide sufficient understanding of the topic. Note to authors: Please provide detailed explanation of each question just like your reading books

My daughter is getting better scores for her SAT practice tests with this Grammar workbook. It may be true that the texts are easier to comprehend, as stated by other reviewers, but this may help my daughter get the concepts better. I would recommend it.

I found this book really useful when preparing for the SAT. If you go through the entire textbook and do all exercises, you can be confident that you will be able to get all grammar questions on the test right

This book offers great skills review and practice questions if you are looking to ace the grammar section of the SAT.

As a tutor I was looking for a very detailed and comprehensive resource to prepare my students for the New Sat until I got this Grammar book which is so helpful and offers lots of practice exercises and new ways of explanations .

Pros: - The book is a model of economy. The concepts are all explained in a clean, straightforward style and by using highly practical, example-driven approach. - The chapters on Subject-Verb agreement, Subject-Pronoun Agreement, Pronoun Case, and Verb Tense are chock-full of excellent examples and illustrations of concepts as they are actually tested on the exam. Many students struggle with the above, so these chapters in particular are must haves. - This book contains ten full-length grammar practice tests, all of which are written to match the format and time-to-question ratio of the new exam. Students will appreciate the exhaustive practice (though they may be dismayed to find that none of the practice tests come with EXPLANATIONS for the answers). Cons: - Much of the content appears to have been simply recycled from content coverage for the Old SAT. - Following the above point, the book gives equal weight and attention to every topic, regardless of that topic's actual importance and relative frequency on the new test. As a result, undue attention is given to topics such as Dangling Modifiers, Subjunctive cases, Adjectives versus Adverbs, and Logical Comparisons - all of which are now relatively rare items on the new, redesigned test. By contrast, the most commonly tested subjects - such as punctuation, apostrophe usage (particularly commonly confused possessive pronouns and contractions) - are not given nearly enough depth or exploration here. - Most of all, the style questions (addition/deletion, detail, sentence placement) - which are a HUGE source of difficulty for students - really get shafted in terms of superficial coverage, inadequate tips, and imprecise practice questions. Verdict: Great examples and demonstrations throughout. However, this book could induce students to spend their time ineffectively. Students will not find adequate coverage on the most commonly tested items. (Punctuation, Possessive vs Contractions, and Style, in particular, need much more fleshing out than is provided here). Furthermore, the book's decision to give all items equal weight does not reflect the true proportion or importance of those items on the actual exam, which will induce students to waste precious time on topics that are now outmoded (or extremely rare) when they should be focusing on the most high-yield items first and then work their way down. Buy either the Erica Meltzer book for SAT Grammar or the Nelson Phu Sat Grammar workbook first. They are, hands down, the best SAT Grammar books on the market, and give much more in-depth coverage, a more accurate sense of relative proportion of the topics, and in many chapters, much more accurate practice. Get this book after using those ones if you still need the practice.

Suitable only for the SAT not for IGCSE or GCSE as the format is not compatible.

The tests in it are really good. I got a full score in the actual SAT Grammar section because of these tests.
