Born in Missouri in 1928, Maya Angelou had a difficult childhood. Jim Crow laws segregated blacks and whites in the South. Her family life was unstable at times. But much like her poem, "Still I Rise," Angelou was able to lift herself out of her situation and flourish. She moved to California and became the first black—and first female—streetcar operator before following her interest in dance. She became a professional performer in her twenties and toured the U.S. and Europe as an opera star and calypso dancer. But Angelou's writing became her defining talent. Her poems and books, including I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings , brought her international acclaim. great book and easy read with the kids.
This was well written and easy read for the children. My granddaughter, 4 grade, used this book as part of her class doing Black History month. i will buy more in this series as I think it is a great introduction to kids reading autobiography and learning about history and life . Thank you!!

Wonderful book! Meant for ages 8-10 but can be read to younger children if you "censor" a bit.
I love this series! This is the first I have bought in the "who was.." series, but I am buying more. I read this book to my 5 year old daughter at bedtime, a few pages at a time, and she was captivated. We just finished it and now she is eager to read about Frida Kahlo. These books are really focused towards age 8-10, and there was some content that I chose to skip over because my 5 yo is not mature enough for it yet. But I was able to read her most of the book. We will keep it of course, and when she is older she can read the whole thing. I wanted to introduce her to the treasure that was Maya Angelou, and this book was wonderful. I also felt that, at her age, reading her a longer "big girl" book over the course of several weeks helps build the skill of sustaining interest in a topic.

I adore these Who was... Who is... books. Maya Angelou was the topic of my daughter’s last research project. This book was perfect for her to read and gain info.

Great read!
My daughter was assigned Maya Angelou for Black History Month. This biography was perfect for my little reader to learn more about this literary icon. It even addressed some of the more tragic moments in Ms. Angelou's life, but in a very age-appropriate way.

I came in to this book thinking I had some idea who Maya Angelou was... to say I had only glimpsed the tip of the iceberg is an understatement. This book guides the reader through her life, highlighting the pivotal moments, influences, and shining light on her many accomplishments and her incredible character.
