what is the difference between this and the Kastar model 87? Other than the prices on the Lang set is lower.

As far as I know, the Kastar name brand was changed to Lang Tools and the tools are identical. The label on the Lang case says made in U.S.A. but that isn't stamped on the tool anywhere that I can see. It's the only tool I've found that works well to R&R large snap rings, but....make certain that you lube the threads before using, and put a drop of thread locker on the little allen screw that holds the retainer in place on the end of the screw.

Yes it does. A fairly nice one too.

I see the suggested rating is up 7”, but has anyone removed larger rings?

I have removed 9” rings with them, but had to make my own ends to change the angle for the extra width.
