Is the sound so loud that neighbors will complain?

I don’t know about your hood, but in mine neighbors complain if a squirrel farts. You CAN use it to train, as advertised, but I personally wouldn’t solely rely on it. I try to reward good behavior more than I discipline poor behavior. I have a German Shepherd who is an angel indoors, but always lunges and barks at other dogs during walks. I’ve used the horn twice so far when he has started his shit and it stopped him from acting a fool. Now I usually just have to show him the horn, and his behavior has been improving on walks.

Is this product just a basic air horn?

It is basically an air horn but it is loud enough at 110 decibels. It works fairly good at keeping aggressive dogs away.

What's the difference between this and the non-XL version? Is this one bigger in size and contains more uses but they both sound the same?

I haven't had a chance to use this horn but I think it will work because it is very loud and should scare off any dogs or coyotes.

Effective towards the dogs around me

I use to go on long walks far from home in areas where there are a lot of dogs. None of them ever bothered me but occasionally people let there dogs loose and they come into my yard with my cats. The horn was very useful for getting them out and away.I do, however, feel like some dogs may completely ignore the horn. Its very loud, by the way. So definitely have to bring your authoritative voice.Another thing is the clip is sturdy so I never worried about to falling off my backpack. Fit perfectly dangling off a side pocket.
