Great Tool
I love this tool. The first time you change the attachments it is a little tricky so use You Tube, but other than that it is great. It is compact and light weight which makes it much easier for trimming the hard to reach places.

Cuts Like a Trooper Using the Hedge Trimmer Blade
I just love this Makita with the hedge trimmer blade attachment. So much so that I purchased a second one for use in our Local Forest Garden. It does the heavy work around trees and bushes that we can't get into with our weed whackers. That way we can protect that drip irrigation lines. I use the hedge trimmer attachment for heavy grass. BUT BE CAREFUL. This is not a toy, and it is very easy to injure yourself if you don't pay close attention. The blades are extremely sharp. I managed to almost cut the tip of my thumb clear off. Battery life is super. Weight makes it easy to handle for long periods of time.

Works Super but Battery is Always Dragging on the Ground
This unit is well made and powerful. It appears to be thrifty with power, but I expect Makita tools to be more well thought out than the competition for the extra cost to purchase it. Changing to the hedge clipper is not difficult but detailed and somewhat tedious. You really want to be able to unplug one and plug in the other attachment to proceed. Not so. Tools are needed and the grease can get messy as you flip parts over and do what is needed. Works well afterward but you pay a price. I use a 4.0 battery from my drill set and I find the battery is always dragging on the ground and screw clearance holes fill up with dirt. This more pronounced with remote handle attachment but somebody wasn't thinking. Makita batteries are expensive and don't want them in the mud. But overall, I am glad I bought it. Love not having to get the string trimmer out spraying clippings on my legs and endangering the basement windows with projectiles. Great for a little bit of trimming but covers a side swath at the same time.

Excellent product
Best garden tool! Bought for my wife. Easy to change out the 2 styles of attachments. Originally She used it to shape her lavender bushes, but now uses it for all kinds of things in her garden. Definitely worth the money if I have a lot of garden maintenance.

Worth every cent for ornamental grasses
I bought this tool to deal specifically with my horrifically overgrown ornamental grasses (about 4' round on each). Given the way my yard is laid out, "hacking" them down with hedge trimmers makes a huge mess. With this tool, I am able to get underneath the 3' tall grass blades and sort of sheer the plant like a sheep. Takes about 30 minutes per plant, but it results in very little mess and I can almost take the plants down to the ground with two huge bails to dispose of. After cutting two plants, the 4AH battery still has half a charge. The only thing I'd recommend on a job like this is to strip the tool of all guards (they get in the way) and bring a kneeling pad. I went with Makita primarily for the brushless motor. The entire tool is VERY easy to hold and handle. Even with a larger battery the whole thing is very light. I wasn't going to trust some $39 Ryobi tool to be stout enough to do what I wanted. The hedge trimmer attachment works good as well. My only gripe is the placement of the trigger safety. It's awkward to engage.

Quality product and affordable price.
This has been a real nice addition to my yard tools. I purchased the extension handle (from another source) and it makes trimming a breeze. I'm 76 with 5 spinal surgeries making it difficult to impossible to bend. This tool has been a godsend. I highly recommend it.

Just doesn't cut.
This is my first review on Amazon. Sorry it's long. I am angry for a couple reasons and feel responsible to let people know about this cordless grass shears. When I decided to buy Makita over lesser priced equivalents was, I wanted the best product and thought Makita would be the right choice that would do a great job. I am extremely disappointed in the performance of this product. I bought it to ONLY cut grass along a white fence so my weed wacker wouldn't damage the fence but more importantly throw grass against the fence staining it green. Initially I was very disappointed how badly the blades cut the grass. It sort of chewed the grass and it took too long to cut. My cheap traditional scissors did it so much better, but it was way too much for my hands. I felt I had no choice but persevere with the Makita, but by the end of summer the grass shears were barely cutting the grass at all. It cut like really bad scissors and the grass seems to go between the blade and it didn't cut but chewed it. Looking at the blades showed no obvious issues. The blades do rub together as expected. So why did it cut so poorly? When I called Makita customer service they wanted me to bring it to an authorized service center that was far from my home or mail it to them for inspection. I told him the product runs but it's not cutting. All they could say was send it in, but the blades are not covered under warranty so I would go through all the trouble only to be told there's nothing wrong with the actual product. A waste of my time and a waste of more than $200 since the shears and the battery together was over $200. Unfortunately they told me I waited too long for a return. I think they should have returned it but even if they are in the right not to refund my money I am still angry and disappointed in this company and its product and advise people to stay away from at least these Grass Shears. Personally I won't buy Makita. I think they should stand by their products especially if their product is poorly designed or just not working properly.

Where's the beef?
I have many Makita 18 volt power tools and find them to be the best I have ever owned. What happened with this design is a mystery. I only wanted it for the small hedge trimmer to cut back my soft stemmed plants like Spider Wort and Lilies. First I had to change out the grass trimmer to the hedge blade. All went well until I went to "slide/rotate" the cover back on. Nope it would turn. Turned off very easily but wouldn't go back on the hedge blade until I found a way to push down as hard as possible and tap the push marks with a small hammer and that's how I finally got it back on. I will not be looking forward to ever taking that off again. Now for the 'beef" part. Why in the world would Makita underpower this thing so much? The big hedge trimmer uses the same 18 volt battery and works amazingly well. This thing crawls compare to that while using the same battery. For what I am using it for it seems to work ok but not very well. Better on my hands (tool is light) than having to use a pruning tool. I suspect that if the tool was appropriately powered it would cut much better. Makita needs to redo the power performance of this handy little tool or people will just stop buying it as word gets out. Update: I sent an email to the customer service email asking them why Makita decided to make this tool to underpowered. The response I got was "I have no input as to the design of this machine". Duh. Typical "not my job" reply. I sent back a reply suggesting they forward my query on to someone who DOES have input into the design decisions. I don't expect an answer but I have now been very informed as to how Makita feels about after market comments, complaints and suggestions from it's loyal customers and it is not a good thing.
