An expert visual history of military personnel, with 600 images of uniforms and contextual analysis. • An incredible directory of the military personnel of the period, with 600 images, including photographs and illustrations of uniforms, kit, weaponry and equipment • Analyses the context of the conflict, and the ideology and politics that motivated the various national forces, as well as the experience of the soldiers who fought on the front lines World War II was a huge conflict, fought on different fronts, covering diverse terrain and involving the fighting men of dozens of nations. At the outbreak of war in 1945 military uniforms had changed little from those worn by the soldiers of World War I, but as the conflict progressed changes were made to adapt to fighting and living conditions. This book covers in detail what the soldiers who fought in the war wore, from British infantrymen in Normandy to Japanese troops in Burma, and from Finnish ski divisions to female Chinese partisans. Lavishly illustrated, with intricate insignia detail, this book offers a definitive visual study of a pivotal period of history. Author and Consultant: Jonathan North is a military historian and editor specializing in Napoleonic warfare, eastern European history, and the two World Wars. He has worked on numerous publications on all aspects of military history. Jeremy Black MBE, Established Chair of History at Exeter University, has over 150 published works to his name. Review: Good information - It was a gift to my history buff kid. we both learned a lot. Review: Accuracy….. - The illustrations in the book are excellent. The majority of figures appear to be painted which is a good deal because you can get a better feel for the actual colors and details for reference. I am very impressed with the book !!!!

Fantastic & detailed illustrations -- with rich background information
Fantastic book. The illustrations are top notch -- and while there are plenty of them, this book is 80% information, 20% illustrations. Perhaps 70/30. Uniforms are not only covered factually, but the "why's" of the uniform choices are as well. On top of that, the first 30 pages or so of the book is rich in background info on WWI. Nothing you don't already know if you're a history buff, but interesting nonetheless. I would have paid 10-20 dollars more for this if I had to, it's honestly that good!

a good reference to paint the figures that come with my 1/48 model airplane kits
An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Uniforms of World War II: This is a very well-illustrated, interesting read. I'm not a uniform enthusiast. But figures are often included in my 1/48 model airplane kits. This book is ideal for me to paint the figures to be reasonably accurate and presentable.

Great for historians and artists alike
This is a beautifully crafted and informative book for historians and artists alike. In general it's both a visually and historically accurate book that can enjoyed own it's on. I purchased it as a reference for my artwork and it exceeded my expectations. Great stuff.

Great Series of books.
I have every title in this series. Excellent artwork that is consistent in each book. I'm a huge fan of the Osprey' Men at War and Elite books but sometimes the artwork isn't as good as I expected. I'm a scale modeler of military figures (1/72 and 1/35 scale) and it's been invaluable. I've been waiting for this publisher to come out with new titles, maybe some more modern uniforms (Vietnam, Gulf War, GWO) I'd pre-buy them.

Extensive detailed illustrations.
Purchased as a gift for an avid diorama builder to use as reference for his intrinsically detailed dioramas.
