Review: excellent book - I like interior design books and I have many. This is more than coffee table book. It provides excellent tips on decorating and the photos are great. There are no negatives Review: Wonderful book for beginners - Wonderful book! I can't get enough of it. It has introduction to styles for beginners like me. No obscure names and unknown words, she explains everything. There are many helpful tips on how to combine textures, choose bright colors vs tonal palette, how to show off what you have, and make it feel like "your" space. It also helps you determine your style. I agree that the quiz makes no sense, but I could go through the list of styles and pick what I like about every one of those. It has plenty of inspiring photos of interiors with explanations of how it was done. It does have a lot of mid-century modern examples, but those are examples and I took them as guides, not as "go do this to your room". Overall, it helped me relax my "every surface needs to be empty and clean" standards and gave me a sense of how to make my house a cozy place.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book
I thoroughly enjoyed this book!! I am a home decorating book and magazine junkie, so I have read a lot of them. I always wondered why my house looked nice, but never like the pictures I see in these books and magazines. Now I know why! This book tells you how to take it a step further and "style" your house. It offered a very different perspective from everything else I have read. I also was quite surprised at my results on the style test. I always thought that I was something different and when I took the test in the book, I couldn't believe what style it said I was. I thought, this is so wrong, but then read the description and thought this is exactly what I like. Now that I have more of a direction, I think that I can cull my accessories and artwork a bit better. This book was just so informative! I just loved it and will probably read it again! Just awesome!

Good -- but not what I was looking for...
Just finished reading the book, and while it was decent, it was not what I was looking for. The book is more about staging rooms for photographs than it is for designing and setting up rooms to live in. If that's what your looking for, then there's probably something in there for you. Reading the book did open my eyes to a few things. For example, my penchant for large substantial furnishings is working against me in the spaces I have to work with. The examples and photos in the book clearly showed that. It gave me a better appreciation for the sense of proportion that needs to be achieved when designing / arranging rooms in your home. This is the first book I've read on interior design. I started into the subject because I'm not satisfied with how my house is set up and functioning. Some of my problems are because I have a lot of "things" (mostly books), and not enough storage to handle them all. But, I've been disappointed in my search for guidance so far because pretty much every design book / resource I've found is aimed at women. Don't get me wrong: my place could use a little "softening up", but pink floral patterns simply aren't going to happen! I need to find some additional resources.

GREAT BOOK FOR STYLING YOUR HOME
I've been a fan of Emily Henderson since she won Design Star on HGTV years ago so I was happily anticipating her book and wasn't disappointed since her and I have a very similar style. I find inspiration and ideas all through this book but I can see how those with a minimal aesthetic or more traditional style would be disappointed. Emily's style definitely leans to mid-century and boho, as many reviewers have pointed out, and many of the rooms she designs and showcases fall into one or both of those categories. The inside look at this book on Amazon features many pictures that are true to those styles so If you aren't a fan of what you see there, don't buy it...there's a lot more of the same on the inside pages. One of the things I like best about Emily is that she sometimes thinks "outside of the box" in some of her design choices and I enjoy the unexpected quirkiness she can bring to a room. I like a bit of "organized clutter" on a bookshelf and think a coffee tablescape is a great way to make a living room more inviting. If you are into that, Emily offers some great tips. The only thing about this book that I didn't care for was the style test. If styling or designing a home is your vocation, it might be a good tool for evaluating a potential clients' style but it didn't help me and was a wasted chapter in an otherwise very informative book.

Full of detail and useful tips for making a space your own
I am surprised by the negative reviews of this book from those her read her blog - the photos, styles, and rooms and very much in the same tone as the blog. I found this book to be fabulously helpful. I agree that the style quiz at the beginning is pointless and worth skipping, but past that I devoured every page. For every photo of a room, she highlights a few points to explain why items or choices work for that room. You don’t have to like the style of that particular room to learn from these tidbits. The tips in this book gave me a foundation to make thoughtful choices about my space to fit my personal style and living style. And the shopping recommendations list at the end is fantastic. I’ll reach for this one again and again.

... this book because I read Emily's blog and I enjoyed her "Secrets of a Stylist" show
I purchased this book because I read Emily's blog and I enjoyed her "Secrets of a Stylist" show. She's a fabulous writer- very real and personable. In general, I like her style. So maybe I had higher hopes for this book than what was warranted. This isn't a design book. It's not about decorating, though it sort of tries to be. It's essentially about styling your home for photos, or to impress guests. The book really started to break down when she moved into functional spaces, since her philosophy here seems to be "style first". The majority of the book is images of rooms, including overall shots and tighter detail shots, with a brief description and some highlighted details of what she did with the styling. Sometimes spaces in two different homes were combined on a page, and that was a little confusing at times. The photography was all very good. There wasn't a chapter on kid's spaces. That was sort of a weird exclusion. I also felt like almost all the spaces were a bit over-styled. I know that's how Emily leans, but it would have been nice to see more minimally-decorated spaces. I think most of the rooms could have benefited with one less vignette each. The book starts off with a style quiz, similar to what she did for her clients in her show. Now, I like a quiz as much as the next person, but this quiz has some issues. First, it used way too many references that aren't particularly common knowledge, and it seemed to assume a high-end lifestyle. I don't think the point system she uses actually works. In the end, I ignored the quiz portion, and decided that the chapter works a lot better as just a style glossary or reference. She barely references the styles again, so I did have to ask "what's the actual point here?" I did really like the middle chapter on the 10 steps to a styled space. It was great advice and easy-to-follow steps that anyone can use and apply to their own situation. I think Emily's personality really showed through the most in that chapter. Beyond this chapter, however, I didn't walk away with very much additional knowledge. I like "Styled" for it's coffee-table cred. There are a ton of pictures, and the rooms are nice to look at. But these styled spaces barely translate to the way I live my life, and how I use my spaces. About the most I can take away from it is her 10-step process and a little bit more confidence styling my bookshelves.

Beautiful book that is a must-have for anyone hoping to have a happier home!
As an avid reader of Emily's blog for many years, I had high expectations for her book and hoped that it would live up to the high standard of content that she has set for herself. I was SO relieved to see that the book embodied her voice, was full of new and useful content (too many books written by bloggers recycle), and had so many beautiful pictures. I was also pleasantly surprised to see many new styles displayed in the book that are not Emily's typical style, but are equally beautiful and still contain her styling signature. I spent over an hour going through the book and didn't come anywhere close to reading everything. What a great book that is both accessible and beautiful!

5 STARS!
Stunning interior styling book by the stunning Emily Henderson! Really lovely photographs which I have not seen elsewhere, always a challenge with Pinterest and Instagram! Loaded with really good tips on how to style a variety of different things like your mantel, sofa, coffee table etc. The style quiz is a great fun element! Emily gives the reader tips on how to style one's home like a professional stylist, breaking it down into layman's language. I have many interior design books, and this one is completely different. This is definitely a HOW-TO book and for that reason I think it's going to appeal to a wide range of people, from professionals to those who don't have a clue about how to style their own homes. This one is going in the basket again, to be purchased for my sister who is going to LOVE IT!
