Can this cut 1/2" thick hardwood or baltic birch plywood? Can you comment on the amount of noise and vibration?

It could cut such wood with this scroll saw, but it would be slow and definitely not my first choice of a tool for this. This Proxxon is designed to cut thinner and softer woods such as you need for making architectural models or general hobby uses such as cutting inlays or such. It really shines in this kind of use. If you want something for more general wood working or cabinet making that will go through heavy plywood and hardwoods you really do need to pay more and get a heavy duty scroll saw that is designed for that kind of work. My personal recommendations of saws for jobs like this to look at are the Porter Cable Scroll Saw for about $200 if you are on a really tight budget, or the Delta 40-690 for about $600 if you want something that will last a lifetime of daily use and make your work effortless.
